Elder Abuse

Also known as elder mistreatment, senior abuse, abuse in later life, abuse of older adults, or abuse of older men/women, elder abuse refers to a “single or repeated commission of inappropriate or omission of appropriate action that can occur to older persons in any relationship, in which trust is expected. The action is deemed an abuse if it can physically or psychological harm to the older persons. An act is considered as an elder abuse if it comes from such a family member as spouse, partner or family members, from whom the older person expects good relationship. As such, acts like break-ins, burglary, and kidnappings by people that are not family members are not considered part of elder abuse, since the older people expect no good from them. Elder abuse has continued to affect many people around the world, leading the WHO declaring it a major concern (World Health Organization, 2016). This paper discusses elder abuse, and critically analyzes the issue from the perspective of implications for practice. As well, the paper discusses the impact of elder abuse on aged care policy overall and aged care delivery at the ‘coal face’.
