CRWR 200/2022 – Introduction to Creative Writing Assignment 1 – Short Fiction

A Little Light After a Dark Dawn The drizzle outside the window betrayed the usual day break in this corner of New London. Gerrard sat up from his bed dodging his head slightly to avoid the bulb above his top bunker bed. At six foot five, eighteen stone, and rough faced, Gerrard was the gentlest giant in the hostel he had stayed in for the last seven months. He had no trouble getting off the bunker bed. His large physical frame had its advantages. He was in and out of the bathroom in a blink. He wore his trousers in haste and his shirt remained half-way unbuttoned. He was only halfway into wearing his favorite brown leather jacket when he jumped outside his room and dashed through the corridor to the front door of the building. He was late. Again! He dashed through the door of his friend’s coffee shop where he worked. ‘I am so sorry I am late’. ‘Please refill the milk reservoir’ the boss told Gerrard as he brushed off his apology.
