Iago Essay A Level English Literature Othello
A LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE OTHELLO A* ESSAY Essay on Iago's Machiavellian qualities in Act 3 Scene 3 A Machiavellian villain is someone who is cunning, scheming, and unscrupulous, especially in politics. It originates from Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), Florentine statesman and author of The Prince, a political article describing use of craft and deceit to achieve political power. Iago is said by many critics to show Machiavellian qualities-York Notes says that he is “part vice, part Machiavelli and… seems to be inherently evil”. This section in Act 3 scene 3, also known as the ‘temptation’ scene, shows Iago’s manipulative qualities as he manages to change Othello’s doting and trusting opinion of Desdemona to questioning why he married her in the first place.
