Introduction
In this assignment I will be explaining how barriers can affect the participation levels for a specific
age group
...
I will also be explaining how
three different cultural factors can affect sports participation
...

Time
The American college of Sports medicine (ACSM) recommend that you should do 150 minutes of
moderate exercise a week
...
For some people their barrier to exercise is time
...
If they are not at work or looking after
the family the adults will often want time to unwind and relax from a busy day and maybe have a
glass of wine or a beer after their long day of work
...
A way to avoid this would be for the middle aged population to exercise 25 minutes after work
can help stress, according to the Anxiety and Depress Association of America (ADAA)
...
They then have to have dinner and have family time before
eventually going to bed
...

One way in which they could do this is by going on a family walk for 25 minutes each night after
dinner
...
This way the
whole family will be completing their recommended amount of weekly exercise
...

Resources
Resources are important for people to exercise
...
g
...
If the general public do not have access to the resources that enable to them to perform
exercises they will think that they cannot do any moderate exercise
...
On TV there
are always adverts about new exercise equipment, e
...
new fitness apps, new trainers or clothing
...
The participation levels
across the UK could drop as a result
...
Or the adverts could change to
say how these resources can benefit you not that it is essential for you to have in order to exercise
...
People with families may find it hard to purchase exercise equipment and also find a place to
store it at home because they need the money to help support the family and also need the room in
their homes for the family
...
Because all the family could use the equipment, the money would have been well
spent as the family could all start exercising and creating healthier lives for themselves
...

Fitness and Ability
People’s ability is innate, people are born with their physical ability characteristics, and these
characteristics (power, co-ordination, muscular endurance, balance and flexibility) can be improved
...
g
...
Depending on how good
someone’s abilities are will depend on how comfortable they are in an exercise environment
...
For people with poor abilities they may feel selfconscious about joining a gym or a fitness class as they are afraid of being judged or ridiculed if they
cannot perform the exercises
...
To get around the barrier of ability, people could start by
performing exercises at home and purchasing some simplistic equipment to help them improve their

abilities and technique
...

Fitness is directly related to ability, fitness is just how good someone’s sporting abilities are
...
If someone has not
developed their abilities then that would result in poor fitness
...
Because of this, some people would think that they could be judged or made fun of if their
fitness isn’t to the level as everyone else
...
Once their fitness is as a reasonable level, they may then join a
fitness class as they would think that they would be able to do the session without feeling selfconscious
...
According the U
...
News
Health people should have created their fitness base by their 20s
...
Despite this, even at the age of 50+ you can still benefit from exercise, it is never too late to
start exercise, just the earlier the better
...
Cross-fit training is a
combination of loads of different types of exercises put into one session
...

Lifestyles
Lifestyle is also an important barrier to exercise
...
By balancing exercise and healthy
eating, people will become fitter and healthier
...
My target age group typically work a 9-5 job and also have to look after a
family
...
To beat this barrier parents could take their
children on family walks in the evening before or after dinner
...
By making sure they do not exceed their
calorie allowance the parents could decide the night before what they are going to have for dinner
because this would allow them to make sure that for breakfast and lunch the family will not
consume too much calories that when it comes to dinner they exceed the calorie allowance
...

Because their body shape would be different compared to someone who eats the right foods and
consumes the correct amount of calories and also exercise 150+ minutes a week, they may feel selfconscious about going into a gym as they would feel as if they do not belong there
...

Medical Conditions
Medical conditions are quite serious for anyone taking part in sport
...
If someone has suffered from heart attacks or cardiac related problems
then you would not want them to do serious aerobic endurance work as this could potentially cause
them to put too much strain on the heart and cause a heart attack
...
It is important for
people to make sure they keep fit and healthy but not to push themselves to the point of breaking
...

For middle aged people it is proven that they can expect a heart attack before the age of 60
...
The exercise they
do doesn’t have to be of high intensity, 150+ minutes of moderate exercise will help to, lower the
risk of heart attacks
...
For some people they may find
this scary or fear that they may risk another heart attack from doing too much exercise
...
This could cause their
heart to stay week and cause more problems in the future
...

Cultural influences
Gender
There is a huge difference between men and women in sport, whether it is at a professional level or
at grass roots level
...
Men also get higher wages
in the sporting industry, for example, Wayne Rooney is on £11
...

Because women have less coverage in the media, it is hard for grass roots players to find a female
role model
...
This goes to show how low
the media coverage is for females in Football
...

Women need to play just as much sport as men as it will equally benefit their health and fitness
...
In the UK alone only 147,000 females played Football this season, on the other hand,
there was a participation rate of 8
...
That is a 5578
...
Because fewer women participate in Football the media believe

there isn’t much point in showing equal amounts of women’s and men’s Football because it costs
Sky and BT a lot of money to show fixtures that not many people are going to watch
...
It goes for more less every sport, more men play Rugby then women, but, women’s
participation is on the rise for Rugby
...

Age
The elderly is the largest growing sector of the population
...
It has been
estimated that by the year 2034, if current trends continue, the population would be 22% over the
age of 65
...
This means that a lot of
people will have a lot of spare time on their hands as they will need to worry about work or their
family, to a certain degree, as they would have left home and started their own lives
...
Because of their free time and the amount they
have, the elderly can find it easy to participate in sport
...
This also means that
the elderly can still meet up for their friends and play sport with them
...
Some sports can be an indicator as to
what class people fall into
...
It is mainly
middle class who participate in sport as they have money and time compared to the lower class
...
The participation levels of contact sports, such as Rugby, are mainly made up of middle
class people
...
This is still very much the same as it is
today; it is mostly middle class people who pay contact sport
...
For lower class people in countries like Africa, they do not
have the money to purchase any sporting equipment
...
As you can see in
the picture, African children are using sticks and stones they have found to create a game of cricket
...

Conclusion
In this assignment I explained how barriers can affect the participation levels for a specific age
group

I also explained how three different cultural
factors can affect sports participation
