Chapter 8 Class Notes
Infancy – Stage of life from birth to one year of age
Vital Signs: Infant
HR: 140-160 bpm
Respiratory Volume: 7-8 ml/kg at birth increasing to 10-15 ml/kg at 1 year
Respiratory Rate – 40-60 minute (drops to 30-40 soon after birth)
Systolic Blood Pressure – mmHg at birth to 90 mmHg at 1 year
Moro Reflex – when startled, an infant throws his arms out; spreads his fingers, then grabs with his
fingers and arms
Palmar Reflex – when you place your finger in an infants palm, he will grasp it
Rooting Reflex – When you touch a hungry infant’s cheek, he will turn his head toward the side that was
touched
Sucking reflex – when you stroke a hungry infants lips, he will start sucking
Developmental Changes:
2 months – tracks objects w/eyes; recognizes familiar faces
3 months – moves objects to mouth with hands; distinct facial expressions
4 Months – drools without swallowing; begins to reach out to people
5 months – sleeps through the nights without waking; discriminates between strangers and family
6 months – sits upright in high chair; begins making one syllable sounds
5-7 months – teeth begin to appear
7 months – fear of strangers; quick mood swings
8 month – begins responding to the word “no”; can sit alone; can play peekaboo
9 month – responds to adult anger; pulls up to standing; explores objects by mouth, sucking, etc
10 months – respond to own name; crawls well
11 months – attempts to walk without help; begins to show restriction frustration
12 months – walks without help; knows it’s own name
