Title: Geography- Primary Economic Activity (Oil, Gas, Peat, Overfishing, Farming)
Description: ***These are not my personal notes written from scratch, I have many sources of which I copied off, edited, drafted and finally put it these notes*** These notes are aimed for more 7th Grade students, and will help extremely for all Geograpghy exams as this is a big chunk of your exams! Although these aren't my words from scratch, I have edited them to perfection (leaving no fluffy bits!) so you don't waste your time reading unneeded information and spend more time actually studying! I have brought down a chapter of 14-15 pages to 3-4 pages so you'll learn quite quickly. These are straight A1 and A2 notes, but I'm only charging €5 as these aren't from scratch, but I did spend hours drafting editing, search and googling (I think that's a word ;p). Anyway, do checkout these notes, I promise they'll help a great deal, even if your not a 7th Grader as it'll be great revision!

Primary Economic Resources
Wednesday 26 October 2016

Primary economic activities are those in
which unprocessed raw materials are
produced from the earth’s rocks, soils and
waters
...

Renewable resources or non-finite resources:
These resources can be used again and again with
careful management
...

Non-renewable resources or finite resources:
These resources, once used, cannot be used again
...

Sustainable exploitation:
This occurs when the present generation uses a
resource for its needs without placing the needs of
future generations at risk
...
It is a
Finite or non-renewable resource
...
Without
careful conservation, the world’s oil resources will
be used up completely within the next 100 years
...
Chemical plants and
oil-based industries were set up
...

Society consumes oil in the following ways:
Domestic: To generate electricity and to heat homes
...

Transport: To fuel cars, buses, ships and aeroplanes

THE ADVANTAGES OF OIL AS
AN ENERGY SOURCE

...
Oil tankers and other ships at sea can cause oil
spills
...

2
...
Oil is a finite resource and will eventually run out
...
The gas off the coast of Kinsale was
discovered by Marathon Corporation
...
The Irish government rented out blocks of the
seabed to Marathon
...
Rock studies carried out indicated that there were
quantities of oil or gas there
...
Drilling started and gas was discovered
...
A platform was then built so that drilling could
continue and gas was transported through a
pipeline to the shore
...
It was also
used to make fertilisers
and to generate electricity
...

This is known as the Corrib gas field
...
This exploration
is controversial, as some people are opposed to it
...

THE DISADVANTAGES OF OIL AND GAS
DISCOVERIES
1
...

Leaks can also damage the enviroment
...
Oil and gas rigs ruin the natural beauty of coastal
areas
...
An oil or gas discovery could increase the cost of
living in an area
...
A discovery could discourage the development of
renewable energy sources
...
However,
peat is non-renewable: this resource, once used,
cannot be used again
...
They are
divided into two main types:
1
...
These bogs
have an average depth of 8 m
...
Offaly
...
Blanket bogs formed in areas where rainfall is
on average greater than 120 mm per year
...
They have
an average depth of 3 m
...

• Peat exploitation is an example of an
Extractive industry
...

MODERN PEAT EXPLOITATION
In 1946, Bord na Móna was established to harvest
peat for commercial purposes
...
There
are four main steps in the extraction of peat from
Bogs;

Milled peat:
This is used to generate electricity at power
stations
...

Moss peat:
This is used to improve soil fertility
...
It is also sold to peat-burning
power stations
...
Overfishing is an example of this
...
However,
fish resources are being over-exploited
...
As a result, fish stocks are falling
dramatically
