Connective Tissue Part 2

Cartilage
 This is a tough but flexible type of connective tissue, compared with bone however:
 It is less hard
 It contains more water
 It does not contain calcium salts
 Compared with muscle:
 It is stronger
 It is less flexible
 Cartilage features some characteristics similar to other types of connective tissue, and some unlike
others:
 It consists primarily of water
 This makes it resilient
 It lacks any nerve fibres
 It is avascular
 It receives nutrients from the membrane surrounding it (perichondrium)
o The perichondrium is a type of dense, irregular connective tissue
o It contains blood vessels
o It does not surround fibrocartilage
o It gives rise to two other cell types:
 Chondroblasts
 Chondrocytes
 It also has a number of key features:
 It prevents friction
