Mean
o aka average
o the sum of all numbers in the data set divided by the number of
entries in the set
Median
o The middle number within a range of numbers
o Line up the data in numerical order
o For an odd number it’s the number in the middle of the set
o For an even number take the two numbers in the middle and add
them together then divide by two
Mode
o The number or item in a data set that appears most often
Range
o The difference between the lowest number and the highest number in
our data set
o Take the highest number and subtract the lowest number from it
Signi?icant digits
o The number of digits in a measurement that you know with certain
degree of reliability
o This will be different depending on the type of measurement tool you
use
o A less accurate tool will give measurements with less signi?icant digits
than a more accurate tool
o If using more than one type of tool you must go with the number of
signi?icant digits that the least accurate tool can measure
Signi?icant digit rules
o All non zero numbers are signi?icant
o Zeros between signi?icant digits are signi?icant
o All ?inal zeros to the right of a decimal point are signi?icant
o Zeros used for spacing the decimal point are not signi?icant digits
Math with signi?icant digits
o Addition and subtraction
♣ Look at the decimal portion of the numbers only
♣ Add or subtract in normal fashion
♣ Round the answer to the least number of places in the decimal
portion of any number in the problem
o Multiplication and division
♣ The least number of signi?icant digits in any number of the
problem determines the number of signi?icant digits
