Joe Rantz was a small town boy who basically grew up in poverty and family conflicts

From being a country boy and then moving to Seattle to live and finish up his last year of high
school he was at best indifferent due to moving into the city

When he got to University of Washington he experienced some of the
snobby city boys who would pick on him, this didn’t stop him though
...
This reflects to the novel because it allows the reader
to see how uncomfortable Joe was when he arrived in Seattle and how it may be a similar theme
throughout the book

He encountered a whole entire nation who appeared to be brainwashed by their
own government
...

Though this nation is special because they’re ran by the Nazi party who controlled and
manipulated the people
...
Germany in the 1930s-1940s was a completely different scene than
most countries ever
...
Joe was also put in a very different situation when he was younger

in a portion of the book when his stepmother hated him and he was forced to live alone when he
was just 15 years old
...
He was left the house but with
almost nothing in it
...
Life could never be simple for Joe Rantz
but this sense of having to be on edge and working hard everyday allowed him to do great things
and eventually achieve a gold medaling in rowing because of his hard work and resilience
