Analysis on the Adoration of the Magi, Gentile da Fabriano, 1423
The painting is in an International Gothic style, which represents the national characteristic
of the artist’s style and features of their own country
...

At the top of the painting, there are three arches which are cusps, that are symbolic to the
trinity of the three king
...
The colour of the star is gold and gold is around most of the
painting, as it associated with power, wealth and was a traditional colour
...

In the second cusp, the magi lead the people up to the palace which is Jerusalem to explain
themselves of why they are travelling
...
In the third cusp, the magi are then led to Bethlehem with the roundel of Mary
in it because of her having baby Jesus
...

As we go to the main panel of the painting, the magi have arrived in the small cave and there
are people who have come to see baby Jesus
...
This can link to the three stages of men
...
The colour of Mary’s clothes are blue and the colour blue
connotes to the sky, which then connects to Mary’s clothes that Fabriano used to show that blue
was considered an expensive paint use, therefore, linking Mary’s wealth with the costly colour
...
Behind Joseph, Fabriano has put different shades and has modelled
the paints to make some effects of the shadows and on people
...
This links to how Fabriano used the journey of the Magi as a chance to portray
his visual imagination and technical skills, along with the way how the magi look like emissaries
with their large numbers of courtiers and attendants on they horseback
...
The white horse has a bridle on their head which represented a
part of the coat of arms of Palla Strozzi and Fabriano painted it as part of the Strozzi family
...

The stage of the painting is shallow as the people at the back might be taller or it could be
that the stage is going upwards
...
The horse at the side has been foreshortened which signified that
Fabriano wanted to give a sense of depth to give pictorial space and perspective
...

At the bottom of the painting, there is a predella of three rectangular paintings
...
) as Fabriano is showing his quest to

display what is going on with the depiction of the scenery
...
When painting the
light source, Fabriano probably used candles to make the light source and shadows look realistic
...
In the second painting of
the predella, it shows the magi to Egypt, where there is a foliage representing just outside the
countryside of Florence
...
The mountains do look gold too as the sun casts the gold on it
...
