...
This affected the Pakistani culture greatly
...
” In the reluctant fundamentalist,
Changez appears to be very attracted to Erica’s ( Aka America) beauty, -that he has forgotten where he was truly from
...
This is true because when Erica was going for a
swim, she asked if he wanted "to come" and he followed her, looking seemingly bewitched by her uncovered body
...
Changez felt uncomfortable with
her body, which can signify the complicated relationship between Pakistan and the United states
...
He even does things that oppose his own culture/religion ( Ex; drink/
doing western things)
...
” Changez shows feelings of being an outsider, when he says that his skin falls typically ‘in the
middle of the color spectrum” which means he’s neither black or white-- he’s brown
...
Despite the fact that he is genuinely “polite”and intelligent, the
Americans still don’t consider him equal to their standards
...
Whereas if an
American said something like that, it would be considered funny (racism at it’s finest)
...
How does this chapter add on to your understanding of what Changes might symbolize?
Changez symbolizes change
...
How soon that would change
...
This is true because in his
time in New york, he seemed to have forgotten where he was truly from
...
This
is also proven when he says that “after 8 months of residence
...
Given the circumstances ” this foreshadows
how his perspective of America will change and cause him to travel back to his home country
...
This is true because Changez feels that serving
America would do harm to Pakistan, since the ‘shadows lengthened” during neo- colonialism
...
America unirtises
...
” Changez also
wants to help his country in a way because he feels “ashamed” of what it has come to
...
so he must have felt that doing so
would somehow aid them in a way
...
Both characters display conflicts
within their identity
...
Where do we see additional evidence that characterizes the American? Are
there any new characteristics introduced
...
1?
No I don't believe that the Unnamed American was the same character from in ch 1, because we can see him slowly becoming
more open minded to the Muslim culture
...
The tea is basically a motif, which symbolizes the Pakistani
culture, due to the fact that all the memories of his country revolve around the tea’s “creamy” taste and “ rich dark color
...
The Unnamed American’s views towards Muslims starts changing
over the course of chapter 3
...
Now in unfamiliar surroundings… uncertain whether it is predator or prey!” This symbolism is used to show how the
Unnamed American is now confused whether Muslims are the actual “predators” to his country- or if America is the actual “prey
...
” - Perhaps he is an American spy who came to Pakistan for a business--(
mission?)
...
4
...
To start off i’d like to point out that Changez even said that he did
not think of himself “as a Pakistani, but as an Underwood Samson trainee
...
this can
signify how he is training to serve America
...
The symbolism of his name directly correlates with that of Genghis
khan, who was a Mongolian emperor and warrior that initially attacked the Muslim civilization
...
For instance; When Changez refers to Wainright as being “at the top position in our
rankings” or when wainwright alluded to Top gun
...
” His instructor even said that he “has a bit of warrior” in him
...
The more backwards a nation is, the more incompetent the workers of the nation are
...
They just permit a specific measure of immigrants to add to
America's lifestyle
...
The fact that the author's choices of words and
allusions compares to a military/or army, helps me understand that Underwood samson is a symbolism to the US
...
You are serving
the US
...
Changez even works as an underwood samson trainee
...
’ The fact that he is a trainee signifies how he is training to serve the the Unites
states! This is proved when he says “he doesn’t think of himself “as a Pakistani, but as an Underwood Samson trainee
...
This shows us how he completely let the US
...
Do you think Chnagez changed his identiy in
5
...
In fact they have begun… The gates are now being locked, as you can see, and those gaps that
remain are too narrow for anything wider than a man
...
This will cause greatly affect Pakistan’s culture, because Changez even says that the “Old Anarkali,” ( rich in
history/ cultural) will transform into a western type “pedestrian- only pizza
...
The fact that
nobody can fit into these “gates,” can symbolize how nobody follows the traditional Pakistani customs anymore, and instead adapt
to the western ways of living
...
How soon that would change! My
world would be transformed, just as this market around us has been
...
This is true because in his time in New york, he seemed to have forgotten where he was
truly from
...
This is also proven when he says that “after 8 months of
residence
...
Given the circumstances ” since this foreshadows how his perspective of America might all change,
causing him to travel back to his home country
...
What are your impressions of Jim so far?
1st impression-Racist/ judgmental: My first impression of Jim was that he was racist and judgmental, Because In the beginning
of the chapter, Changes even said that “his eyes were cold, pale, blue and judgmental,” when he “glanced down” at his “resume
...
”
2nd impression-Understanding: My second impression of Jim was that he is understanding
...
This is true because he even told Changez that he “gets” where he is
“coming from
...
” We also begin to see how understanding Jim is, towards the end of
chapter 3
...
”
3rd impression-Artificial: Despite the fact that Jim turned out to be a really nice/understanding guy, I feel like he is giving
Changez special treatment, because they have been through the same thing
...
Maybe this can foreshadow some upcoming events?! His character is pretty artificial in
my opinion, because while he does offer Changez the American Dream, I believe that it might involve some scheming or
manipulation to really get there
