Bio notes
v Producers – (Autotroph) organisms who can obtains energy and make their own
food
v Consumers – (Heterotroph) organisms who have to obtain energy though
consuming others
v Photosynthesis –process that uses energy from the sun to transfer into ATP
energy and to make sugars
Ø Light dependent reactions – step involving the collection of sun energy and
using it to make ATP and NADPH
Ø Light independent reactions – (Calvin cycle) Take the ATP energy, collect
carbon dioxide from the air and water from the ground to build sugars
v Cuticle: waxy covering that reduces water loss
v Epidermis: Skin protecting lead tissue
v Palisades Mesophyll: high concentration of chloroplast
v Spongy Mesophyll: Contains air spaces for gas exchange
v Vascular Bundle (Vein): runs from the tips of the roots through the tips of the
leaves and has two parts
Ø Xylem: transports water form roots
Ø Phloem: transports sugar or food
v Transpiration: Process where as water evaporates from the stomata’s in the
leaves, and therefore water is pulled from the roots
...
This creates NADPH
v Light Independent reactions – Occurs in Stroma, where sugars are build using
chemical energy to breakdown carbon dioxide and make sugars
v Factors that affect photosynthesis
Ø Light intensity
§ More is better
Ø Carbon Dioxide Level
§ More is better
Ø Temperature
§ Increases at temp increase, but drops because it can get too hot
denaturing the enzymes
v Carbon Fixation – pulling carbon out of the atmosphere
