SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES
LESSON PLAN HPE1202

LESSON ORGANISATION

(based on Australian Curriculum: Health & Physical Education)

Intention:

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to demonstrate a “drop punt kick”, a “torpedo punt”, a “snap kick” and a “checkside
kick”
Pre-lesson organisation:

Make sure the footballs are pumped up ready to be used by the students, enough for each student in the class,
but if not 1 footy between 2 students
...
Colour coordinate the grids with cones if
possible
...
00

Beginning class organisation:

Observations
(What to look for)

Task Management
(Management of Student Group)

- Bring the class into a stationary point and have them siting down
...
02

9
...
Students get put into their
allocated grid (one for the girls
and one for the boys) and they
will each have a football
2
...
Going through these movements
gets the students used to the
shape of the football
4
...

5
...

-Teacher is in between the two groups
and watching how the students are
going (walking around)
...

Bridging organization
To move smoothly onto the next activity, bring the class in and have the students get into partners and have a seat on the
ground with that person
...

Lesson Plan Template 2016

9
...
Students are to get into pairs and
have one football between the
two of them
2
...
Make sure the students have
enough room between each other
should leave 5m
4
...
Watch
technique of the students and fix
if necessary
...
If a pair finishes early, extend
back for further distance or
challenge to see how many kicks
they can do without dropping the
ball on the ground
...
Break again into groups of 3, and
kick in a triangle using just the
drop punt kick
...

Kicking
To complete and execute a simple drop
punt kick the criteria is as follows; (for a
right footer, left footer is the opposite)
Start with a double handed hold of the
ball down each side and have the seam
of the football facing the direction that
you want to kick

-Teacher is wandering around and
watching the different kicks being
undertaken
...

-“Step, stop and let it drop”
Step with the opposite foot forward,
guide the football down with one hand
and follow through with your dominant
foot to connect and strike the football
...

-Demonstrate a torpedo punt; hold the
ball in a diagonal direction, and repeat
the same process as the drop punt
(step, stop, let it drop), ball should spin
the way you held it and is for extra
distance on the kick, if completed
correctly
...

-Students are focused on their
technique, positioning and drop of the
ball for the different types of kicks whilst
they are trying to kick it to their partner
...
30

Time

Bridging organisation
Students will be asked to stop kicking the ball and asked to gather in their group of three and sit down on the ground
...
Demonstrate next activity in
front of the others with a group of 12
...
32

9
...
Divide the group into
approximately 2 groups of 15
students
2
...
There will be two groups of 3
students down one end and three
groups of 3 up another end
around 20 metres apart
...
To start off with students must
work with the other two team
mates and handball the ball in
and out so it’s a weaving motion
until the other end
5
...
To advance the drill provide a
defender/ defenders into the
middle that will put a little bit of
pressure on the group coming
through and may cause the
weave to dismantle
7
...

-Dominant hand extends backwards and
come forward in a swinging motion and
follows through
...

-Teacher stands at the side of the drill
watching both groups and assessing
to see if a defender needs to be
included
-Students should weave the ball from
end to end
...

-Students must be engaging in the
activity and talking to each other, as
communication is vital in this drill
...

Bridging organisation:
Bring the students in and ask them to get back into partners
...
Use the markers for the 3-man weave to create the bases of the footy
baseball game
...
50

9
...
Split the students into two teams
(eagles and dockers) and have
them line up in a straight line, one
team to the left and one team to
the right
2
...
The fielders will spread out just
like a baseball field and have
people on the 3 bases, whilst the
rest of the players guards space
4
...
Game is simulated exactly like
baseball, except the batters kick
the football and the fielders have
to handball and run the ball back
to home base or one of the bases
once they have collected the
football
...
Aim is to have as many home
runs as possible and that will be
the winning team
...

-Teacher is standing, watching and
counting the home runs as they will be
the main umpire, calling fouls and
whether the person is out or not
...

-Batting students need to be attentive
and ready, whilst cheering on their
teammates
...
Allocate a
student from each team to return all equipment (cones, bibs and footballs)
...
