HOW TO CONSTRUCT EFFECTIVE SENTENCES ?
What is an Effective Sentence ?
A sentence is said to be effective when it serves the purpose for which it is meant; the purpose
can be anything, sometimes to describe something, argue a point or expound a theory
...
In short, an
effective sentence is the one that imparts sense to the listener and at the same time the one
that follows the right grammatical syntax

2) It should be free of solecisms ( grammatical errors )
...
So every sentence has two parts- the subject and the predicate
...
The subject is always a noun or noun
equivalent
...
Any sentence can be made more complicated by enlarging the subject and extending the
predicate by adding modifiers
...
But mainly it becomes so due to the improper ways of
expressing a particular idea; for the way in which an idea is expressed matters a lot
...
You can improve your writing skills by simply following
the tips given below :
1) while you construct a sentence be cautious to be positive rather than negative by avoiding
"no" , "not" etc except when the negative idea seems very emphatic
...
The second sentence is simple and colloquial by the first one is ornamental
...
2) Always prefer specificity to generality
...
Just compare the two sentences:
a) "The fearful sounds of the night kept me awake"
...
You can feel that the second one is more effective than the first one
...
3) You can employ figurative language for improving your style
...
compare these sentences
...
b) "She sang like a nightingale"
...
4) Monotony should be avoided at any rate
...
Imagine that all your sentences begin in the same way and have roughly the same length , your
sentences would be absolutely monotonous in that case
...
He jumped on to the sidewall "
...
Now look at the improvised version given below ,
"A dog came against him barking fiercely forcing him to climb on to the sidewall "
...
5) A judicious use of "periodic" sentences can improve the quality of your writing
...
Though periodic
sentences are not common in modern literature it was popular in old English
...
Relatively less important ideas may be relegated to the middle of the sentence
...
6) Always give the most appropriate word for an idea
...
Consider the examples ,
"I heard from the kitchen the sound of the cutlery falling on the plates"
"He stood at the door with his hands resting on his hips"
Now look at the improved version :
" I heard the clatter of the cutlery falling on plates"
...
7) Learn the art of subordinating the less important ideas to the more important ideas
...
Use subordinate conjunctions to combine ideas in such a way that the
sentence pattern shows relative importance of the ideas
...
He was given three ships by the queen of Spain "
...
8) Avoid faulty parallelism and mixed metaphors
...
For example, look at the sentences ,
" John was taciturn, shy and lacked the courage to face people"
...
" John was taciturn , shy and timid "
...
In both cases , the latter is more effective than the former
...
Also avoid dangling modifiers
...
" I only contributed 15 to the fund "
"After we had waited for half an hour , the train arrived "
...
Here the former is misplaced whereas the latter is correct
...
Normally it is used when the doer is unknown or
irrelevant , in case of general truth or when emphasizing person/thing acted on
...
"Insulin was first discovered in 1921 by researchers at the University of Toronto"
...
"The telephone was invented in the nineteenth century"
11) Avoid slangy and informal expressions i
...
writing in a way that one would speak
...
For example instead of writing " This ain't working " , write "This is not working"
...
" we could write " It is rather cold outside
...
"The soft hair of my cat feels silky, and her black color sparkles as it reflects sunlight"
...
(persuasive)
13) Do not modify the idea to accommodate the words you like
...
“Literally” is a weird word because somehow, in recent years, it has been used for literally the opposite
of its definition
...
For example ,
"There are literally millions of stars in the sky"
...
)
"There is literally a snake in my bathroom"
...
)
The words well and good do have similar meanings, but “well” is an adverb and “good” is an adjective
...
”
whereas "good” is an adjective, which means it describes a person, place or thing ,
“This is a good TV show,” or “He is a good boy” etc
...
