Unit 26: Managing Business Information
P3: Describe how information is used for different purposes in a selected organisation
In this task, I am going to explain the different ways that Tesco uses information for their
benefit, in order to optimize their sales, workforce, etc
...
Tesco would use
customer information in order to keep track of customer shopping habits, so that they would
be able to give them customer benefits, based on what they bought, so the customer may be
sent vouchers, offers and recommendations, through the Tesco marketing email that helps
customers save money on the things they usually buy, or even recommend products to
customers, which they haven’t bought before, in order to boost sales
...
Secondly, Tesco uses information in order to see what customers think about Tesco, so that
Tesco can then make changes to improve in the long term
...
Tesco may use qualitative data in order to make services more efficient, for
example, on the Tesco website, after the customer has completed their online purchase, a
survey may pop up, asking about the customers experience on the website, so they can ask
their opinion on the website, where they usually shop, what they usually buy, etc
...
Tesco may also use information, in store for different purposes, such as stock control, in
order to maintain the level of stock in store, to ensure that the shelves are never empty
...
This would be carried out to optimize stock
control, so that the data regarding stock is always measured, and therefore, to the customer,
the shelves are always full, and so if they come in expecting the product, they will be able to
get it, as the product will be in the back of the store in the warehouse, and therefore, an
employee can then stack the shelves if necessary
...
This may be put down to other factors, such as promotion and price, so for example,
if the manager can see that customers aren’t buying a specific brand of toilet roll, the
manager would then make a decision to reduce the price of that brand of toilet roll, as they
have seen that other brands have been selling well, and the manager will then see that if
they reduce the price, they will be able to shift the stock for now, and in the future, the
manager will decide that they would make a request not to sell this particular brand in the
future, as it won’t sell at the recommended retail price set
...
For example, Tesco managers may review how many transactions there are per till
on average per day, and this may tell them if they need to increase or decrease the amount
of tills they have in the store
...
On the other hand, if the Tesco manager views the average transactions on the self
checkout, and the self checkout sales volume is much higher compared to the normal
checkout, then the manager may decide to remove some normal checkouts, and replace
them with self checkouts, as this may save space, reduce customer wait times, and also
save money for the store, as they would be paying one or two fewer salaries, as they
wouldn’t need to keep an employee, as they have been replaced by the self checkout
...
In terms of home delivery, Tesco needs to account for where
the customer lives, so therefore they can select the warehouse, so that the delivery driver is
as close as possible and doesn't have to drive as far, in order to keep the food fresh, and
also to ensure that the customer gets their delivery on the day they requested and on time
...
Also, in terms of click and collect, the store needs to
ensure that they have the product in stock, so they can give the product to the customer, or
alternatively, they would have the product delivered to that store, if they don't stock it, as the
customer has chosen that specific store as it convenient for them, so therefore Tesco needs
to ensure that the product and place is correct
...
For example, if a Tesco store markets a promotion
such as “Buy one packet of green grapes, get one free”, the manager may then view the
stock count or transactions, to see how many green grapes they sold from the time the
promotion started to when it ended, and compare this information to the month before the
promotion, and from there, the manager would see if the sales figures were superior, as if
the sales figures increased a small amount, then the manager wouldn’t carry out this
promotion again, as financially, it wouldn’t be worth it, however, if the sales figures for green
grapes doubled or tripled the month of the promotion, the manager would carry out the
promotion, so every few months, you would see the same promotion, as it was successful
the last time
