Muscular Tissues
Nervous Tissues

-

Regulated by neurons that are part of the
autonomic division and by hormones from
endocrine glands

Muscular Tissue
Definition: Muscular tissue consists of elongated
cells called muscle fibers or myocytes that can use
ATP to generate force
...

1
...
In short, it activated the muscle
2
...
Produces body movements
2
...
Storing and moving substances
4
...
Electrical Excitability
2
...
Extensibility
4
...
Smooth Muscle Tissue
- Located in walls of hollow internal organs
like:
 Blood vessels
 Airways
 Organs in abdominopelvic cavity
 Skin (attached to hair follicles)
- Lacks striations like in skeletal and cardiac,
hence, referred to as “smooth”
- Its action is involuntary; some also has
autorhytmicity
Organizational Structure of Muscular Tissue

Nervous Tissue
FUNCTIONS:
 Exhibits sensitivity to various types of
stimuli
 Converts stimuli into nerve impulses (action
potentials)
 Conducts nerve impulses to other neurons,
muscle fibers, or glands

-

Consists only of 2 principal types of cells:
a
...
Neuroglia

2 Principal Types Of Cells (Nervous Tissue)
A

Cell body
2
...
AXON
 “axo” = axis
 Single, thin, cylindrical process that may
be very long
 Output portion
 Propagates nerve impulses

Parts of a Neuron
Classifications Of Neurons:
A
...
MULTIPOLAR NEURONS
- Several dendrites and one axon
- Brain and spinal cord, motor neurons
2
...
UNIPOLAR NEURONS
Dendrites and one axon fused together
Pseudounipolar neurons
Sensory receptors
4
...
PYRAMIDAL CELLS
Cerebral cortex
Pyramid-shaped

B
...
SENSORY NEURONS
- Afferent neurons
- Sensory receptors
- Unipolar structure
2
...
INTERNEURONS
- Association neurons
- Sensory information – motor response
- Multipolar structure
B
...
CNS
1
...
OLIGODENDROCYTES
- Smaller and fewer processes than astrocytes

-

-

3
...
EPENDYMAL CELLS
Produce, monitor and assist in the
circulation of cerebrospinal fluid

Neuroglia – Central Nervous System
B
...
SCHWANN CELLS
- Encircle PNS axons
- Participate in axon regeneration
2
