Introduction:





Derived name from Greek word “herpin”(to creep)
Family: Herpesviridae
More than 100 herpes virus have been isolated
Eight herpes viruses infect humans

Types
Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 (Oral
herpes)

Herpes Simplex Virus Type-2(Genital
Herpes)

Infect Oral mucosa, lips,nose

Sexually transmitted disease(STD)

Mostly occur during the childhood

Infect the genital
areas(Vagina,cervix,Scrotum)

Cornea of eye(herpes keratitis)

Also causes sores around the genital
areas

Cause Cold sores & fever blisters

Infected women can pass virus to new
born during birth

Can be reactivated in immune
compromised person

Women are more infected than men

Also cause genital herpes but rare

Can also affect the mouth

Similarities:
 Both types are asymptomatic
 Can appear anywhere on the skin
 Both types can pass through skin to skin contact

Structure:






Nucleic acid double stranded DNA
Capsid-Icosahedral and enveloped
Constructed from 162 capsomers
Capsid surrounded by tegument(proteinaceous layer)
Contains 15 protein species and some virus m RNA

 Spikes are present on envelope and composed of 10 glycoproteins
 Contain at least 12 glycoproteins

Painful blisters or ulcer appear
Flu like symptoms appear
Swollen lymph nodes
Fatigue
Lack of appetite
Red blisters on the skin
In case of HSV-2 the person also have painful or burning feeling
during urination

Transmission:





Type 1 can be transmitted by oral to oral contact
By using the infected objects
By touching the infected areas
HSV-1 can be transmitted to genital areas through oral-genital contact
and so as HSV-2
 Through sexual contact
