Teaching Leadership Styles:
Autocratic style: “because I said so”
Characteristics:
- Rules are stated in the negative form: Don’t interrupt
- there is no discussion about rules
- The belief that children are naturally unruly and impulsive; without strict rules, there
would be chaos
- This is the most common form of discipline that you experienced as a child
Draw Backs:
- The concern is not about students internalizing and understanding the rule, but just
following them
- Uses fear to control and manage behavior
- Students only follow the rules when the teacher is around and watching them (external
control)
- Some students may become defiant or resistant to rules when there is no purpose
explained
- Some students rely on the adult to guide their behaviors and cannot make decisions
- Can create an orderly classroom but without self-control, students can feel anxiety,
resentment, and anger

- Teaches what is socially responsible behaviors; students learn the value of responsible
behaviors
- Do not rely on punishment or rewards- don’t ignore detrimental behaviors- Set clear expectations for behavior and actively teach students how to live up to those
expectations
- Students understand how their behaviors impact others and themselves (selfawareness/social awareness)
- Teachers use respectful strategies to stop the misbehavior and restore positive behavior
quickly
- Teachers are firm, kind, and consistent
- Maintains the dignity of all students
- The teacher understands students and the need for movement, order, and students to
be in control of their own lives and learning; skills need to be continuously developed
- Creates a caring community; students learn to think and act in socially responsible ways
