Nadine Sarreal is a writer from Seattle that was born from Filipino parents
...
In addition to that, she is also the author of a good amount of
short stories, one of which is "Clearing Debt
...
Clearing Debt tackles the idea of remorse,
desperation, hopelessness, women oppression, and compromising one's principles
...
At the death chamber, she saw the crowd watching as well
as the convicted sitting in the chair
...
Then, she strapped the hands and feet of the
prisoner onto the chair and covered her face with black cloth
...
The executioner had to will herself to
touch the lever and in that moment, the odor of urine rose up to her nose
...
Then, she wished that no one saw her
wet pants
...
The executioner didn't answer it for she thinks it was too late
...
Sarreal also used
metaphor to make the story colorful; she described the crowd of people, "a massive centipede"
...
Not only that but also the way that the author tells the story is in first person point of
view
...

At the beginning of the story, her anxiety was also shown as she cannot meet anyone's eyes and
with dry her mouth, the narrator thought "it was my first time, and as it turned out also my last,"
pertaining that it wasn't her job in the first place and she's only doing it because she has to
...
And, with how the convict converted three
times, shows her desperation
...
Unfortunately, that was in the past
...
Soon, the executioner had to bind her
upon the chair
...
The convict had lifeless eyes and cold skin as the
narrator strapped her arms and feet; it's as if her soul was long gone despite before her
execution
...
After a moment, the warden gave the signal and the people,
who were all men, started swarming the window, trying to get a better view
...
The warden said "It's time
...
", intending to record the time of death and also signify the last hour of the convict
...
Even if it goes against her principles, she had no
choice because she'd already taken the money
...

Ironically, the one who wet their pants wasn't the convict but the executioner, herself
...
The warden, the
person who ordered the execution, turned his back to the convict and the crowd as if he had
nothing to do with it
...

This short story can be analyzed under feminism because the convict and the executioner, who
are females, were the ones oppressed and affected the most
...
The convict had no one
believing her; she had no relatives nor friends who came for her
...
Her hope was crushed, forcing the life
out of her as it came too late
...
This is the new debt of the executioner
...
On the other hand, the warden stood on top of all; he is the rule and what he
says, goes
...
The main reason for the appeal of this work to
the audience is its dark themes; it portrays real life problems and issues such as women
oppression and compromising one's principles
...
These are all dark
however those became strengths of the work
...
The way that
the story is told provided a close connection between the readers and the protagonist as it is
open with emotions the character feels and with that, it made it easier for the readers to
imagine themselves in that situation
...
In addition to that, it's
about death penalty which made people curious
...
Especially, it teaches us a lesson and made us aware of the oppression, forcing us into
motion
