General Form of a circle to Standard Form
General Information
General Form: X2+Y2+aX+bY+c=0
Standard Form: (X-h)2+(Y-k)2=r2
Where (h,k) is the ordered pair of the center of the circle and r is the radius of the circle
...
STEP 2) Take the coefficient of X, divide it by 2, then square it
...
STEP 3) Add the results of STEP 2 to both sides of the equation
...
Ex) X2+Y2-8X+20Y+107=0
1) X2-8X+Y2+20Y+107=0
2) X2-8X+Y2+20Y=(-107)
3) Coefficient for Y: 20
Put the X and Y terms together
Move the constant to the right of the equal sign
Take the coefficient for Y
20/2=10
Divide by 2
102=100
Square it
4) Coefficient for X: -8
Take the coefficient for X
-8/2=(-4)
Divide by 2
( -4)2=16
Square it
5) X2-8X+16+Y2+20Y+100=(-107)+100+16
Add the results to each side
6) (X-4)2+(X+10)2=9
Factor it
This means that the center is: (4,-10)
And the radius is: 3
