How to empower participants
What is empowerment
Empowerment is the process of obtaining skills in horse riding and or care for, for people who
wouldn’t normally be able to do it for themselves
...
Empowerment also includes encouraging, and developing the skills
...
Empowerment helps so that the individual
can take initiative and make decisions to solve problems and improve their own performance
...
Empowerment means to gain knowledge and understanding
...
Benefits of empowerment
WRITE EACH HEADING ON WHITE BOARD
*self reliant – control of own outcomes
*Responsibility-‐ responsible for own actions and think for themselves
...
This sounds obvious but how come most of us don’t do it
...
We seem to rely on some sort
of gut instinct or thought pattern within us, that we think this is the way it should be done
...
We become confused, feel angry, feel hurt,
indignant, feel rejected, feel not good enough, etc, etc
...
In order to do this, you need knowledge of
some sort
...
But to do this, one has to own and know your
own power and be able to access it and use it appropriately
...
It is believing in yourself it is confidence in the
extreme but not big headedness
...
So what if you lack confidence and thus cannot become empowered
If you can’t do it for yourself then get someone who is specialised to help you to get the answers and
understanding for you
...
When the next similar event comes up then you
will be empowered to overcome that similar kind of situation, and will not react negatively
...
Becoming empowered means doing this exercise over and over again every time you have a reaction
to anything, you will build up huge knowledge about yourself
...
As you do this more and more you will overcome your
fears that were holding you back, making you feel dis-‐empowered
...
Thus we can see the barriers to empowerment are lack of confidence, lack of knowledge and fear
...
You would have no idea what to do so that you can go on
...
In this situation you would be empowered (feel empowered) for you would know what to do to get
yourself going again
...
Staff
If you empower your staff then they would have decision making power of their own
...
They
would have a range of options so that you can make choices
...
They would have the belief in self to the extent that they felt
that they can make a positive change
...
They would be
involved in the growth process and changes of the business
...
Through the proper
use of choice I can change my life
...
Empowering ones staff is not a means
that the coach can now distance themselves and not have any responsibility for their staff they are
just as responsible especially if something goes wrong
...
Nor is it merely a case of delegating duties
...
However, empowerment is
intended to serve as a motivational strategy, while delegation is a system of assigning work tasks to
employees for positive production
...
Responsibility implies a relationship
...
Authority connotes a function or title
...
Empowerment must balance responsibility and authority
...
Being empowered presupposes some level of common sense and emotional
maturity
...
In order to have the knowledge to complete this task I empowered myself by doing research I didn’t
just sit back and say I can’t do it
...
Or put differently
by Peter Jordaan from the Self Empowerment and Development Centre “Within all of us lies the
potential to achieve whatever we choose
...
all it takes to resolve, is personal
responsibility and courage !!
