Kite Runner: Chapter 3
Element
Notes
Plot summary
This chapter describes Amir’s recollections of his upbringing with
the disapproving Baba, who is presented as a great and powerful
man, as well as being a well-respected community figure
...
We see how Amir feels blamed for his mother’s death in
childbirth, who he appears to resemble more with his love of
literature
...
Characters
Baba, Amir, Amir’s mother Sofia, Hassan (only mentioned) and
Rahim Khan
...
This is ironic, as
Hassan and Amir are robbed of knowing their true fathers due to
Baba’s affair with Sanaubar (Hassan’s promiscuous mother)
...
He is clearly rich, making him
powerful, as he built an orphanage over a period of 3 years
(against advice)
...
Baba’s supposed wrestling the bear
implies his physical strength and 6 ft 5 stature, as well as
foreshadowing his prevention of the woman on the truck’s rape
...
Amir thinks that Baba hates him because he “had killed his
beloved wife, his beautiful princess” when his mother was giving
birth
...
According to Amir, “real men didn’t read
poetry… real boys played soccer”, a sport which Amir is
“pathetic” at
...
Amir crying at the brutal horse
games also annoys his father, who has a “disgusted” look on his
face and is very “angry”
...
Baba believes that there is “something missing” in
Amir, which is found in Hassan
...
This
also shows how proud of his father he is and how he is
constantly trying to prove himself to him
...
We realise that she was a descendant of the royal family and
taught Farsi literature at the university
...
Rahim Khan has
a fatherly bond with Amir, and he criticises Baba for wanting Amir
to have a “mean streak” or be “violent”
...
For example, Baba owns and runs with Rahim
Khan “a wildly successful carpet-exporting business, two
pharmacies and a restaurant”
...
Resilience,
toughness and courage is needed
...
Zakat = the Muslim belief in donating money to the poor
...
