Kite Runner: Chapter 24

Notes
Plot summary
Sohrab and Amir flee to a hotel in Islamabad and Farid leaves
them - his work is done and he has been generously reimbursed
for it
...
As they grow closer, Amir invites Sohrab to come to
America and live with him and Soraya
...
The pair go to Daman-e Koh
viewpoint and they eat and play panjpar together - Sohrab is
starting to speak and ask more questions
...
But there’s no hope, so Amir requests a
visit from immigration lawyer Omar Faisal, who offers a few
options (including sending Sohrab back to an orphanage)
...
Characters
Mr Fayyaz – the hotel manager, Raymond Andrews – American
embassy official and Omar Faisal – Islamabad lawyer
...
This creates a false sense of security and
Sohrab’s addiction to the TV highlights its importance as a
beacon of communication and escapism
...
Sohrab is still mute and rocks silently on the
bed
...
He has put his life on the line and his
family may still be at risk from Taliban, if they realise that he
helped Amir
...
It will serve as a life-changing form of insurance
for Farid, allowing him perhaps to rebuild his home and send his
children to school
...
Amir is panicked when Sohrab goes missing and calls his name
whilst searching the hotel room
...
This suggests that his fatherly instincts are
developing and he is less sheepish and cowardly
...
Fayyaz assumes that Amir is Sohrab’s father,
which is ironic as Amir is driven by guilt - he doesn’t want any
more blood on his hands
...
Sohrab runs away to the mosque because it feels like a safe
space where he can be anonymous and blend in with the crowd
...
Mosques may be safe spaces because of their
holy protection and the fact that people go there to pray and find
redemption for their sins
...
This is because of the
developing paternal connection between Amir and Sohrab,
helping Sohrab to let go of his guilt
...
Sohrab asks if there are hawks in America, as he asks silly
questions before leading into more serious questions for Amir
...
He asks if
they were loved equally, causing Amir to think of Baba’s birthday
gift of surgery to Hassan
...
Amir’s redemption is complete after his conversation with
Soraya, as he tells the truth about his past - something he should
have done 15 years ago, when she admitted that she wasn’t
chaste and had run away to live with a man
...
This is incredibly frustrating,
despite the fact that it is supposed to prevent exploitation by
foreigners - in reality, Sohrab being abandoned in
Pakistan/Afghanistan would leave him vulnerable to abuse
...
Andrews is a tragic character, despite his clinical and curt
outside appearance, as his daughter died by suicide
...
Soraya speaks to Amir over the phone, stating that her mother is
excited for Sohrab’s arrival
...
Soraya also delivers good news - Kaka Sharif has got
friends in the INS and he will pull strings to aid Sohrab’s
adoption
...
The
Afghan government will not prioritise the adoption and Sharia law
also forbids the practice, making it even less likely
...
The options are limited: try to claim
asylum, try an independent adoption, seek a humanitarian visa
or the best option would be to send Sohrab to a Pakistani
orphanage for several years, whilst Soraya and Amir file a 1-600
form and are screened
...
His trust has been
betrayed so many times, particularly by adults who were
supposed to protect him
...
The deep irony is that, when Sohrab can come to the
US legally, it is too late
...
This will save himself from further
suffering
...
However, there are
numerous hurdles to him taking Sohrab to the USA - just when
the situation appears to be resolved, the narrative twists yet
again
...
INS is the US Immigration and Naturalisation Service
...
Afghan
vocabulary
Masjid = mosque
...
