ESSAY PLAN COMPARISONS:
SECTION 1 [ INNOCENCE ] :
'In Sweet 18 and Romeo and Juliet innocence is both portrayed through my the subject [The
boy] and Juliet
...
'
The comparisons of Romeo and Juliet and her innocence compared to Sweet 18 are :

In Sweet 18 innocence is portrayed where it quotes 'Who can see snow unbroken and
not long to crunch the crunch the chill of it underfoot: to make their mark on white?'
What we can infer from this quote is that there are 2 major categories in this context '
Dominant and Subservient' or 'Positive and Negative' We call already tell that snow is
white
...
The word 'underfoot' is negative as it is not
something you would class as innocent, it is dominant compared to snow
...

In Sweet 18 the innocence is portrayed at the start-middle of the poem where it states
'Your face clear of the awareness that clouds mine
...
Naïve technically means showing a lack of experience,
wisdom or judgement, it can also be linked to innocence
...

In Romeo & Juliet we can see Juliet is portrayed as innocent at the start as she is polite
and obedient to her mother, she only talks when needed and takes into consideration
about what she says before she comments, we can infer this from the quote in Act 1
Scene 3 'Madam, I am here
...
In addition Juliet asks what is
your will, which helps to convey her obedience, The fact that Juliet is polite and
obedient to her mother suggests that she is innocent
...
' This quote helps to portray her innocence as she tries to find a way out of kissing
Romeo, this may imply that she is scared to have her first kiss and may not be
emotionally ready for the challenges of a relationship
...
This is similar to the quote in Sweet 18 ' Your face clear of awareness
that clouds mine
...
This helps to draw
reference to the idea that the subject is also innocent likewise Juliet
...
What is your will?' helps to convey Juliet's
innocence as it shows Juliet's politeness and obedience towards her mother
...
This can also help to indicate the fact on how Juliet is subservient compared to her
mother who appears to be the dominant candidate in this situation
...
]
In this quote snow is subservient and underfoot is dominant, this is similar to the relationship
Juliet has towards her mother ; Juliet is innocent and pure [ Just like snow ] and her mother
is cold and negative [ like underfoot
...

In Sweet 18 jealousy is also portrayed through the quotation 'it stands to reason I
must want you to stay like this' we can infer a sense of jealousy here as the persona
wants the persona to stay the same, this indicates how she might be jealous so much
that she wants the subject to stay the same and never change
...
We can see this from the quote 'This precious book of
love, this unbound lover, To beautify him only lacks a cover
...

The comparisons of Juliet and her jealousy compared to Sweet 18 are that jealousy is
portrayed in the quote 'Who could wish to make away such innocence? such perfection?' This
quote helps to indicate the jealousy the persona feels towards the subject as she is constantly
referencing him to positive things which may show a sign of desperation and jealousy that
she keeps mentioning him
...
' this helps to
indicate that Juliet's mother is jealous perhaps of her daughters youth and beauty and she
wishes she could be young again
...
Juliet professes her love towards Romeo whereas in Sweet 18 it is
focused on more lust than love'
The comparisons of Romeo and Juliet Juliet and romance compared to Sweet 18 are :

In Sweet 18 romance is portrayed through the quotation 'I'd let my tongue learn each
taste and texture: the warm flesh juices and the eyes' salt; the mind's crisp freshness: I
would leave nothing
...
The part where it mentions tastes and textures gives a sexual tension

towards the relationship of the persona and subject so perhaps it could be more than
what meets the eye?
In Sweet 18 passion can be seen through the quote 'Think of me as old Mother Time,
your parasite, your predator' however through this quotation it can be seen as a more
attached, overly protective love/passion the persona feels towards the subject, we
can see this through the words 'your parasite, your predator' these words give the
impression that the love the persona feels is more on the aggressive side than a
mutual love, this is what helps to indicate that the persona is attached the subject
more than usual
...
The more I give to thee,The more I have, for both are
infinite
...
This helps to illustrate how Juliet feels towards Romeo and this is
why this links with the theme to love/romance as Juliet thought marriage and love
was petty and something she did not want to experience until she met Romeo, this
helps to show a change in her attitude from the minuet she fell in love
...
The more I give to thee,The
more I have, for both are infinite
...
In Romeo and Juliet Love is more realistic and its more natural
whereas in Sweet 18 it feels more forced and aggressive almost like the persona needs to feel
that way towards the subject
...
'
The comparisons of Romeo and Juliet on death and destruction compared to Sweet 18 are :

In Sweet 18 destruction is indicated through the quote 'Who has never wished to put
a stone through a great, clear, shining pane of glass:' This quote is kind of provocative

almost like she is trying to convince herself of how unresistable it is to not want to
wish to break glass, I can analyze this through the words 'great, clear, shinning pane'
where she uses a rule of three which suggests she may be trying to convince herself of
something
...
This is what creates the whole idea of
destruction and how she wants to destory his innoncence
...
For example even through the quote ' to disarrage one leaf, one
floret, would be to vandalise a gracious pattern' it assembles a destruction aspect to it
and has inentions of destruction linked towards it
...

In Romeo and Juliet destruction and death is portrayed through the quote 'Evermore
weeping for your cousin’s death?' where Lady Capulet reffers to Juliets dead cousin
...

In Romeo and Juliet destruction and death is portrayed through the quote 'Yea, noise?
Then I’ll be brief
...
There rust and let me die
...

The comparisons of Romeo and Juliet on death and destruction compared to Sweet 18 are in
Sweet 18 destruction is portrayed through the whole poem as the persona mention nice and
innocent objects and then ends the sentence about that being destroyed in some shape or
form, so from this we can already see the destruction
...
