•   This  symbolises  human  reason,  it  works  on  the  basis  of  human  laws  and  has  no  
power  beyond  this  
•   When  the  solider  initially  refuses  to  give  the  governess  his  bicycle,  he  is  
‘symbolically’  denying  a  belief  in  the  irrational
