Tracking Test 2- Abigail visits John in jail
...
At the back of the room there is a small barred window, beside it, a large heavy door and
along the walls are two bare and cold wooden benches
...
The room appears empty except for a man who is chained,
hanging limply, to a wall
...
The silence is suddenly interrupted by the tapping of footsteps and rattling of keys from
down the corridor beyond the hall
...
Proctor (winches in pain as he speaks): I have told you many times and I will say it again, I
will not confess
...
Proctor (groans and looks up with glazed lifeless eyes): Abigail, please tell me, what are you
doing here?
Abigail (her voice softens): John… have you been tortured?
Proctor (ignoring her and with a trace of anger in his voice): How did you get here Abigail?
(With a callous laugh) Call witchery on Herrick?
Abigail (ignoring him with an imperceptible smile): It’s good to see that your spirit has yet to
be broken John
...
Abigail (with a hint of heartache): I know you love me John, don’t try to deny it! She is
locked away in jail now, you can confess and we can be together, she cannot split us apart
anymore!
Proctor (with shock): Love? How can I love someone who has condemned the lives of so
many innocents? Abigail, what we had, it is in the past, a mere mistake that will haunt me
until my last dying breath
...
Abigail (with an eerie smile): Shout all you want John, its only me and you now
...
Proctor: Abigail, no more games, what is it you want?
Abigail: John, I am not sure if it is just a rumour or not but I have heard you are to be
hanged tomorrow unless you confess, is this true?
Proctor: Aye, it is true
...
If you were to simply confess—
Proctor (defiance in his voice): I will stand my ground, I will not confess!
Abigail: But why not John? It will save your life, you can live a long life with me, your boysProctor: You must understand Abigail that if I were to confess my name will be blackened
and I will not allow that to happen
...
Proctor: But-
Abigail: Come run away with me, there is no need for us here anymore! I am scared that
there will soon be a protest
...
Mercy Lewis and I are leaving Salem
tonight and you can join us, it will be us together! We can marry and we—
Proctor (shocked): Abigail what nonsense are you peaking? This is madness!
Abigail (continuing more eagerly): We don’t need to worry about the money as I’ve taken
some from my uncles’ savings
...
I am not a coward, I will not run
away like you and abandon my family
...
(Softly) Goodbye John
...
She then looks at him with pity as a small whimper leaves her lips and walks out the
door, never once looking back
...
As Abigail’s footsteps become softer and softer the deafening silence that was there before
she came grows louder and louder, leaving Proctor to dwell on the trial that would follow in
the next few hours
