English 102
Synthesis Essay
Who am I?
There are many different ways to analyze pieces of work to better understand what the
author is trying to convey to his audience
...
It is evident that keeping
these four groups in mind, it would make is easier for an author or writer to direct his
message to a specific audience
...
The black rank and file is directed
towards the “man in the street” which basically means the average regular man
...
Black rank
and file and the white layman are very comparable: both groups put emphasis on
biographical sketches and pop culture(Pattern 3)
...
The only difference between the two is that white academia rely on factual
documentation to prove their facts
...
This group sees the country in separation and they
do not have original research leaving out some things in history
...

Malcolm X’s essay, “Message to the Grassroots” could almost have been written
with Quarles’ black revolutionary nationalists in mind
...
Malcolm X
tells states that the people that identified themselves with the master were called “house
niggers” and he goes on to say that house niggers still exist today (67)
...
He wants to live near him
...

You’re nothing but a house negro
...
This quote explicitly illustrates Quarles’
description of the exploitive black revolutionary nationalists because Malcolm X clearly
believes that some of the black people today are conditioned to follow the white man’s
rules and in Quarles’s essay he states that this group has traces of paranoid thinking,
one which holds that the forces of evil are banded in an eternal conspiracy to maintain
their oppressive sway
...
The tone of Malcolm X’s essay is expressed clearly when he says “imagine a
negro: “our government!” I even heard one say “our astronauts
...
With this quote in mind it is clear that the tone
in Malcolm X’s essay could be used for the black revolutionary nationalist group

because it is very judgmental and bitter toward African-Americans who still are under
the “slave” system
...
O’bryant’s essay focuses
on achievements of the ancient Egyptians and it focuses less on European culture
...
“Many of the techniques and innovations in use today originate from the times of
ancient Egypt
...
This
quote shows that this essay is not going to be focused on European culture but rather
recapture the past of ancient Egyptians and this is what the black academia focuses on
...
In O’bryant’s essay he expresses a vast knowledge of the culture and he focuses
on broader subjects and this information can be tied in with the black academia group in
Quarles’ essay
...
O’bryant’s essay has
some comparative studies between the Greek and the Ancient Egyptians and sticks to
facts rather than basing the information on feelings
...

After dissecting and analyzing Quarles’ essay, it is evident that Quarles has
made it easy to categorize information with their intended audience
...
