Introduction: In this assignment, I shall be explaining the key influences on the
personal learning processes of individuals, in the form of a 2000 word essay;
looking at the key points and factors that influence me on a personal level;
referring to own personal experiences I have gained throughout my life; i
...

through school (both home school and mainstream (early to primary education);
volunteering; people I have met that have shaped my ideals as a person; and
looking at my career aspirations; personal attitude as well as my own personal
priorities and responsibilities
...
And
finally I shall be listing all my research links and materials in the form of a
bibliography
...

P1:
Explain key influences on personal learning processes of individuals

The main definition on the Oxford dictionaries website is “ process of

receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university:
a
course of education” or “A body of knowledge being acquired whilst being
educated” or “an enlightening experience”
...
It
doesn‛t necessarily have to come from “a learning provider” such as school or
college and university; it can come in various forms

During our education, we can gain a variety
of skills; such as learning to work independently (focusing on own learning,
learning providers that set individual tasks for students to complete; or working
alone on a practical basis in a practical environment such as through work

Career aspirations can also be a major factor in
your education path; for a number of reasons, though more often than not these
can change in the earlier part of our life in particular as our personal opinions
may change; we may a life event that could change our career path altogether or
the educational factor of not having the right grades from formal schooling to
get on to the right course in Further Education or Higher Education or the right
job depending on what area of work you have chosen
...

For genetic factors, individuals who suffer from a long term chronic health
condition such as Cystic Fibrosis, Autism or Asthma as three examples could
lead to an individual having to take time off from formal education in order to
receive proper health treatment; which can have a negative effect if a student
were to struggle to catch up
...
In my own personal experience I have found that as
a result of personal background, life events as well as genetic factors as well as
the other factors have shaped my education experience overall
...

I was homeschooled till I was 16 from the age of 11 years old; till the age of

These “people” influences did lead to some negative impacts from
the point of view when I did eventually enroll at college I was extremely nervous
when it came to talking to my peers and teachers as I was worried that the
same thing would happen; that history would repeat itself
...

During this time, it lead to me being extremely self reflective; initially at school
the way I felt was that I had to change my self-image in order to fit in;
however later I learned that the right people would accept me for who I am;
regardless of the way I look, which was a breakthrough in my emotional
development from the point of view that I didn‛t feel the need to consistently
seek approval from my peers
...

Looking at my previous learning experiences, I have done a fair amount of self
regulated learning; which is basically taking a look at my previous learning
experiences and seeing how I can improve and what I can do to help me to
achieve my goals, such as listening to classical music whilst I study or do
coursework which I find to be an excellent learning tool as it helps me to clear
my head and allow me to think objectively

Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934) believed that people and their
cultural environments constitute an interacting social system

By using
these tools within the social system, learners develop higher-level cognitive
functions such as problem solving and self-regulation

These coordinated processes do not
operate independently of the context when they‛re formed; however these
processes are undertaken unaided by an individual student without being

A student's self-regulated learning
processes reflect those that are valued and taught in the culture of the
student's home and school/learning environment

Zimmerman suggested that self-regulated learning process better

It involves learners attention and willpower;

As individuals we learn from those around us; especially from an early age our
family members; in particular those of a later life stage

these can tie into experiences with relationships, behaviours that may not
constitute a healthy lifestyle such as a parent‛s eating habits (i

poor diet,
eating disorder such as anorexia or obesity); alcohol consumption (i

drinking) or other factors that could be detrimental to an individual having a
healthy lifestyle such as smoking and excessive or lack of exercise

It is only later when they are
exposed to other influences as they go through the life stages such as
education, and socializing with peers they learn to form opinions of their own;
learning what works well and what does not work well for them personally

Bandura (1977) believes that humans are active
information processors think about the relationship between their behavior
and

and its consequences
...
Bandura conducted the “Bobo Doll Experiment” where
he performed a collective number of experiments over the period of two years
studying children's behavior after watching an adult model act aggressively
towards a Bobo doll
...
The
most notable experiment measured the children's behaviour after seeing the
model get rewarded, punished or experience no consequence for beating up the
bobo doll
...
It shows that people not only learn by being rewarded or punished itself
(behaviorism), they can learn from watching somebody being rewarded or
punished, too (observational learning)

From a personal point of view; I have learned from those around me; I have seen
how destructive greed in relation to large sums of money can be from the point
of view of observing how one side of my extended family managed to
deteriorate rapidly when they effectively competed to try gain extra money
from a woman who was never a “positive influence” on those around her; which
lead to bad feeling and a number of them not speaking to one another

I have also learned a great deal from my parents; who have fought hard to
look after all three of us within my family (my older and younger brother as well
as me) and have clashed with other family members who initially thought they
were failing me as parents by home educating me; as well as health and
education professionals; who in relation to me initially refused to entertain the
idea of me having any difficulties and suggested it was all my fault; that I could
just try harder or alter my appearance and personal likes in order to become
accepted by my peers and to have my marks improve, this was until my parents
finally found a diagnostician who took the time to listen
...

I have also had a number of learning experiences in the form of learning in
various different environments/settings
...

During this time, I learned a number of good work skills that could be applied to
any working environment; good communication skills in speaking with the
different team leaders and colleagues, also adapting my communication skills
accordingly if I was working with a child or an adult/child with physical/learning
disabilities I would try to make sure that I used non threatening body language
and tone; I had a clear method of speaking and would listen to my colleagues

Looking at David Kolb‛s theory of learning I have found that I can relate to his
thesis; as I have managed to evaluate and learn from both immediate and long
term experiences; using them as a foundation to build on as I progress
...
First, immediate
and concrete experiences serve as a basis for observation
...
In the next step, the learner forms abstract concepts
and generalizations based upon their hypothesis
...
After this step, the process
once again cycles back to the first stage of the experiential process

personal learning each learner ought to:

● seek out opportunities to learn using that style
To understand your particular learning style Honey and Mumford have developed

Looking at the Learning Styles tests results that I took when I first started
college on a part time basis, I initially had a strong leaning towards being a
visual learner, however over time I have incorporated other forms of learning in
my day to day life
...

Overall, I feel that I have a good work ethic; at times I may struggle to
motivate myself, so I go to those who care about me who give me the confidence
to continue forward
...

Although I am aware that academically I could be able to progress even further
should I wish to, but I feel that my personality type as well as personal
preference is that of an assisting role; not as a leader/manager though I know
that this does have the potential to change later on in my life
...
On placement, I have tried to put to use
the practical knowledge I have gained from my previous placements
...

Due to having previous experience with adults/children with learning
disabilities/multiple disabilities in the form of having a younger brother with
severe autism and other health problems; he has complex needs which take the
form of those around him needing extremely good interpersonal communication
skills in order to anticipate his needs and make sure that those needs are then
met, I have been able to apply those skills as a result to my second placement;
although I have only done two days so far; I feel that I am working to a good
standard and that I have built a good working relationship with the students and
staff
...
 Assignment Hand in: 22/04/2014

Towards the end of my very first work experience placement, (Larkrise Farm) I
felt able to actually help new students who came to the farm during my last two
weeks working there; I was able to show them around effectively and work
alongside them; passing along tips that I had picked up during my stay
...

On my very first day of this placement, I did make a couple of mistakes; mainly
miscalculating with the hose pipe (and earning a rather soaked face t shirt for
my trouble) and getting flattened by a flock of sheep when it came to feeding
them (I had been holding the feed by my side, though am told this is a common
new student error)
...
e
...

Initially I was admittedly clumsy at supporting students during some of my first
placements; mainly due to a lack of confidence in my own abilities; however I
hope to have demonstrated a certain amount of competence to my tutors and
peers during my time at college; during lessons I have tried if I can to support
other learners; seeing where I can help and when needed seeking the advice of
lecturers where appropriate
...
e
...
However, during this particular year of study I have managed
to develop my skills effectively in order to benefit those around me; during our
class placements we have been keeping a reflective diary of which I have been
trying to refer to on a weekly basis, looking at what went well and what areas
could necessarily be improved upon and also meeting with my tutor for a one to
one tutorial every term to discuss my progress
