Journey's End notes
ACT One
● Hardy starts the play in the dug out and starts saying bad things about Stanhope and
while talking he is drying his sock on the burning flame of a candle
...
A
big attack is going to happen to the C company within the first couple of days of the start
...
● Osborn is looked up to for advice by the other men as he is the oldest so the other
soldiers think of him as the wisest and also feel so comfortable around him that they call
him ‘uncle’
● Raleigh requests to be sent to Stanhope`s company as he knows him from school and
wishes to be in the company where he knws Stanhope
...
● Trotter tells Raleigh about the day to day life in war and about how some days are very
quite and other days can be very loud with gunshots and with grenades
...
● Hibbert is relieved of duty and enters into the dugout where Stanhope and Osborne are
having a conversation and Osborne is trying to get Stanhope to go to sleep but
Stanhope won't allow it
...
● Stanhope is very drunk and starts to babble on to Osborne about his emotions and
Osborn has to put Stanhope to bed
...
ACT Two:
● Trotter and Osborn discuss memories of home by talking about gardening to keep their
spirit up and to remind them of home

● The big attack has been rumored to be happening on the 21s which is the thursday
...
Osborne and Stanhope are being horrible about Trotter and is talking about how he has
drawn 144 circles for each hour of each day and also they laugh about the fact they don't
think Trotter has any imagination any more
...
After Stanhope snatching the letter he doesn't have the courage to read it so he gets
Osborn to read Raleigh's letter out loud to Stanhope and when Stanhope heard what
Raleigh said about him and what Raleigh said the other men think about him he
suddenly had a sudden flow of guilt and he couldn't escape it
...
Stanhope and Hibbert have an argument as Hibbert is trying to leave so that he was not
there when the big attack on the 21st (tuesday) happened and this caused upset as
Stanhope thought it was cowardly to try and leave because he was scared
...
Stanhope after listening to Hibbert decided to go into the trenches with Hibbert so that
Hibbert can feel more relaxed and prepared for anything that happens
...
● During the raid Osborne and six soldiers are killed by a hand grenade while waiting for
Raleigh to return from the German trench with a German soldier
...
This makes the colonel very happy so two bottles of champagne
are sent to the dugout
...
Mason is ordered to make coffee for the men and then he is commanded to suit up and
join all the men outside the dugout
...
Hibbert wakes up and is trying to waste time as he doesn’t want to be out in the trenches
when the big attack happens so he uses excusing such as, the champagne leaves your
mouth feeling extremely dry
...
