How is Iago presented in Act 1 of Othello?
At the start of Othello Iago is seen as very racist
...
The use of this xenophobic language portrays Othello to be an evil
character to the renaissance audience before they have even seen his
character in person, they are making a mental image from Iago’s insults
and racial slurs
...
The characters that we see first are Othello and
Desdemona getting married
...
Unlike the play, we are given
an image of Othello from the off, instead of making one up from Iago’s
derogatory terms
...
Iago is seen as a puppet master throughout the play as he is controlling
everyone to get his way
...
’Call up her father!,
By the use of the exclametive punctuation, it is depicted that Iago has
had a brilliant idea when he has been brewing his manipulative plan for
a long time
...
Iago has told Rodrigo that he is
cunning and sly but he takes a different way while the audience are
unearthing its true colours
...
This shows from the start that Iago is very
manipulative and wants other people to do his dirty work
...
We see Iago hiding
away behind a pole, looking over the shoulder of Rodrigo and looking up
at Bebantio, while he looks out of his window
...
Looking up at Bebantio as he is a
important figure, over Rodrigo as he is just being used, and seeing Iago
hiding and letting Rodrigo take his bullets showing his manipulation
skills
...
Iago
convinces Rodrigo to inform Bebantio about Othello’s marriage to
Desdemona
...
This cunning and
manipulation depicts Iago to be a Machiavellian Character which
develops throughout the duration of the play
