Overview of the study: “Sexisms in Selected Rap Songs”. Unpublished student’s thesis, Bukidnon State University, Malaybalay City, 2014. Stereotyping and discrimination towards women in the society is a common circumstance in most cultures. Some culture may have showed it implicitly while others have showed it explicitly as it is reflects on how they treat women and of how they present them in their language as heard in their choice of words. Unfortunately, English Language, one of the world’s dominant and influential language possesses this explicit way of discriminating women as shown in their expressions, movies, and songs. These discriminations towards women in language are called sexism. This paper examined sexisms that are found in rap songs. They were categorized using Umera-Okeke’s five elements of sexism: sexism in semantics, sexism inherent in the morphology of the language, sexism in syntax, honorific/use of titles, and the use of non-parallel terms.
