Lady Macbeth Essay

Is Lady Macbeth the true antagonist in Macbeth?

With multiple villains present, Macbeth by William Shakespeare presents many figures who
insight and cause the atrocities observed in the play
...
Shakespeare makes Lady Macbeth appear as the insidious source of these crimes,
but in fact she is not
...

While Lady Macbeth does appear to be the true villain as she manipulates Macbeth, the
beginning of the book demonstrates there is a darkness hidden behind his “noble” façade
...
This is reflected in Act I Scene III directly after he hears
the Witche’s prophecies
...
Macbeth demonstrates he is a “butcher” and Lady Macbeths manipulation
is only an aid to his guilty conscience of wanting to kill the king
...
Macbeth revels his true character long before Lady
Macbeth learns of the prophecies and therefore demonstrating that he is mostly the main
villain of the play, but not entirely
...
They played with his mind, and implanted ambitions above all

others, causing him to feel unbeatable, confused and insecure
...
This manipulation ultimately results in Macbeth killing Duncan
even though he had “no spur” as the witches drew “him on to his confusion”
...
The six prophecies that Macbeth is present, are
in essence a way for the supernatural to infiltrate his mind and manifest simple words into
mind bending ideas
...

Lady Macbeth has no influence or relationship to Macbeths actions after the murder of
Duncan
...
She couldn’t live with “doubtful joy”
and is observed to try and stop Macbeths murderous mind
...
Firstly, presented in the murder of
Banquo, his greediness and “fears in Banquo” push him to have his “noble” friend and an
innocent son killed
...
Macbeth is a hero gone bad, a man whose
superstition and fears have take control over and spiraled him out of sense and reason
...

Lady Macbeth does act as a catalyst for the evils in the play, but the true antagonist role
falls to Macbeth and the supernatural
...
This theme of villains still has a relevance in todays
society as some people will try to influence us to do negative things
