The teacher’s behavior plan that Mrs
...
CHAMPS, is a module of classes that most new teachers are now encouraged
to take, focusing on classroom organization as the key to managing discipline
...
The premise being that most classroom disruptive
behaviors are directly linked to a lack of organization
...
Communication refers to whether or not the students can talk during a certain
activity
...
Activity defines what they will actually be
doing
...
And lastly,
participation means how will you know they are participating
...
During my observation it was clear that the students in the classroom were well
meshed
...
I felt like the teacher did a great
job with meeting the needs of each individual child
...
She made sure to take the time to walk around and check
each child’s work during workbook time to make sure they were on the right track, if
they weren’t then she would circle where they messed up, ask them to look at it again, if
they still got it wrong she would sit and help them figure it out
...
The children were always extremely happy
and excited to learn
...
“However, when children get excited about
learning and teachers realize that learning is a social process, classrooms become
dynamic exciting places” (222)
...
Material management was definitely a big part of the teacher’s management of the
classroom
...
These bins were labeled
so that the children would know what they were and where to go when asked to get
certain materials
...
The students new this corner was not to be touched
...
When it was time
to get materials the teacher would call the students by table to get their supplies
...
The teacher pre-sharpened all of the pencils
before the school day began, so that it was never an issue during the day
...
When leaving for the day the teacher would call out for “bus riders”, “walkers

and bikers”, “extended day care”, and “car riders” she would make sure they all got to
where they were going
...
They are young and still learning, and it is important for a teacher of younger students to
remember this and be prepared to deal with different forms of misbehavior
...
Reiland
handled misbehavior in different ways
...
It was obvious that his misbehavior was geared towards
attention seeking, and when he was given attention he continued to do the behavior after
the teacher looked away
...
Reiland chose to ignore this student
...
Other misbehaviors that occurred in the
class, such as pushing, name calling, etc
...
Reiland had five square pieces of colored
paper hanging on the board
...
” At the beginning of the day all of the students clothes pins were pinned to the
top box “Great Job”, if a student misbehaved throughout the day the teacher would lower
their clothespin down the boxes as she saw fit, until it hit “parent contact”, then the
student would get a letter home and an email to his or her parent
...
The students whose name got closer to
“parent contact” suddenly had a change in attitude and began to behave; they did not
want the ultimate punishment of their parents finding out
...
Reiland also handled
certain behaviors between students by asking the students what they could have done
differently, or if what they did was nice, and then asking them to fix the problem
themselves
...
Teaching student self-management occurred a lot in the class that I observed
...
• Students picked their own partner for partner reading time
...
This took no voices, and so
it did not interrupt the lesson
...
• The teacher would do the first two or three math problems with the students but
then they were on their own to finish the rest
...
I noted how well the students worked on their own for such a young age group
...
“Structure for EC-6 learners is important for success” (Nash & Cohen, pg
...
This statement could never be more true, and I really noticed this throughout my student
teacher observations with Mrs
...
The schedule for this
classroom was the same every day except for Monday
...
, until 12:30, then it
snack time and story time until 1, then it is reading and writing time until 3 which
consists of individual reading time, partner reading time, story time, and one-on-one time
with the teacher
...
This allows the students to know what is
happening next and to be able to relax and not stress about their day
...
It has been a great experience so far!
Response to Karen Scharfman
It really shows you that the teacher is taking the time to make her students
feel comfortable and welcome when she takes the time to write down the thoughts
of the student with the broken finger
...
It is definitely
great when a teacher can give the students a task and have them work on it while he
or she works with individual students
...
Unfortunately I agree that material management is important in a classroom,
and it is too bade that the teacher you observed does not put this as a priority
...
The
classroom I observed had separate bins for the books that were fiction, non-‐fiction,
poems, etc
...
The classroom arrangement you experience
sounds similar to what I observed, and it was definitely effective
...
That means they really
respected the teacher, and had a great understanding of the classroom rules
...
It sounds like you had a great observation and I hope the rest of them are as
good!

Response to Stephanie Reed
I think that is a great way to start the day, with a morning meeting
...
The teacher I observed used the same technique with the “you can
practice now, or you can practice at recess,” students don’t like their recess being
taken away, and tend to focus harder and pay more attention when they know they
are at risk for loosing it
...
This is definitely a motivational way to keep students on task and behavior in
check
...
From what I’ve
learned it is a great method, and focuses a lot on classroom organization, which
leads to positive behavior
