National Curriculum and Physical Education (NCPE)
Physical education has been around for more than 100 years and started at the
beginning of the 19th century
...
It acts as a way of getting out of the
classroom and releasing some extra energy
...
Physical
education can save lives as it teaches pupils how to swim and stay physically healthy
...
These separated the classes of boys
...
Younger boys were often forced to act as
servants to the older boys; this was called ‘fagging’
...

These games were seen as a way for the boys to expend excess energy and acted as
a discipline due to the boys making rules and appointing leaders whilst staying within
the school grounds
...

Rules of these games then began to be more intricate and organised this then had a
positive effect on the overall school
...
These games then began to further develop and boys who used to be at the
school were asked to come back and teach the boys so that they were then able to
compete well against the other schools
...
(The
sixth formers controlled the younger boys and the playing of games kept the
boys under control)
...
Physical education is a core subject and therefore compulsory
...

Gain knowledge of the body in action
...
PE can also be therapeutic where it has health as well as
physical benefits
...

The NCPE has six groups of activities
...
games (invasion, striking and fielding, net/wall)
2
...
swimming
4
...
dance
6
...

At key stage 2 (years 3-6) pupils should follow the six areas of activity
...
They should also begin to sustain exercise
...

At key stage 3 (years 7-9) pupils must follow four of the six strands one of
which must be games and another dance or gymnastics
...

At key stage 4 (years 10-11) Pupils should follow games and one other activity
and learn how to prepare and evaluate an exercise programme
...
Teachers have to carry out an assessment
on the pupils to measure their attainment, for some this motivates them to do well
however others disagree with this and say it takes the fun out of the activity
...
Although in recent years it
has been accepted as part of their role
...
It
is down to the government that they have the right facilities to able to offer a
suitable PE curriculum
...

Schools sometimes overcome this by sharing facilities with the local community this
is called dual use (sporting facilities are provided not only for educational purposes
but also for the community to make use of)
...
This can often be down to the
smooth running of the facility; this is done most efficiently by one administrative
body
...

The government’s policy of sport development targets social inclusion (a term for
areas that suffer from a series of negative poor health, poor housing, high crime, low
income, unemployment)
...
The
government felt that they needed to widen opportunities to participate
...

 Improved success in international competition in sports that are most
popular to the public, for the ‘feel good factor’ WINNING

In order to achieve these goals there were four main areas that also needed to
succeed:

These need to tackle
all the barriers to participation (such as time, cost, information or
motivation) as well as failures in provision (coaches and facilities)
...
High performance sport: better prioritisation of the sports that
should be funded the most to reach the highest level
...
Mega sporting events: there should be a continuous approach to
hosting these events
...
Delivery: There needs to be organisational changes so that the
government can determine what will work and how much money can
be invested into sport
...

Sports Colleges: A secondary school that receives raised funds from the
Department for Education in order to raise standards of physical education
and sport within its own school
...

they need to in order to continue their involvement in sport at a level that
best suit their abilities
...

Sports Leaders UK: Provides opportunities for young people in the UK to gain
experience and qualifications to become voluntary leaders in the community
...
This
engages the youth into a positive discipline and reduces crime possibly
resulting in a stepping stone to employment
...

TOPS Programme: This is a charity whose aim is to implement and develop
