Introduction
Dignity is an extremely important to everyone in society
...
In this essay I will be discussing the
importance of dignity and the possible effects and repercussions that getting treated with and
without dignity can do to a person and even an organisation
...
“Dignity is an aspect of the way that we relate to each other
socially” (Reed 2007) This tells us that even basic interaction matters in regards to dignity
...
He said “Dignity is a moral property innate to all humans
...
” (Barilan 2012) This supports my argument that everyone on earth is equal and each
and every person should be treated with the same level of dignity as everyone else
...
It is the norm in modern day society for people to have jobs in order to survive
...
People without
jobs may often suffer a lack of dignity
...
I fully agree with Hodson
...
Such resentment can lead to
a whole range of other problems such as depression and in extreme cases suicide
...
(Daily Mail 2010)
This shows the serious implications that not having a job can be distressful to many people
...
Abrahamson discusses that when people stray away from the norms of society people lives can
often lose meaning
...
“When the bonds that tie people to a society are weakened,
individuals do not retain any meaningful goals” (Abrahamson 2009)
I personally have experienced losing a job and the loss of dignity that occurred when I
became unemployed
...
I found this hard to handle as I have always tried to be independent especially with my
finances
...
When I lost my job I myself felt lost
...
“Marx regarded work as a central human activity” (Abrahamson
2010) This tells us that work is important to all human beings and work can give us a sense of worth
...
I
think this is why having a job is so important to people
...
CIPD call dignity “a basic human right” (CIPD 2006) So why is it organisations do not have
policies in places regarding the dignity of having a job? There are a whole range of factors as to why
this could be
...
This is one quote from an
academic Buddhist book “Dignity will signify exceptional strength of character” (Goldsmith 2010)
This shows us that even religion can see the importance of dignity to a person
...
This can be doing things
such as: speaking to someone unkindly, making excuses instead of apologising, making fun out of
someone or doing things that you know that person will not like
...
Deliberately taking someone’s dignity from
them is one of the worst things a person can do, especially in the workplace
...
If costs start getting too high for a company, then it might want to close down all its plants and
move to a country with a cheaper labour market
...
However due to their lack of a dignity policy companies can relocate a lot easier than if
they did have a policy in place
...
Just having a job on its own does not automatically mean a person will feel dignified
...
One example if from The
Smith’s song “Heaven knows I am miserable now” (The Smiths 1984)
“I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?”
These lyrics show that although he has been able to find work he doesn’t feel valued at all and
shows how he feels he is being treated without dignity and is not valued
...
It shows his clear
lack of dignity as he questions why he should give someone his time if they don’t care if he lives or
dies
...
Lucas discusses some of the various factors that can influence whether a company treats its
workers with dignity or not
...
(Lucas 2011) I think this might often be the case, especially when it comes to organisational
position
...
This
could be because they hold a higher position within the organisation so are often valued more which
leads to them receiving better treatment
...
Stetson in his book “Human dignity & contempary liberalism” Believes
that over reason years’ people are being treated with less respect and dignity than in previous years
...
I think however this is not the case, I feel that a good and well respected workforce is the key
to any organisation
...
Heidegger thought that with the increase of technology a human work force would become less
valued which further supports my argument
...
The CIPD website discusses what makes
dignified work “Dignified work is work that is interesting and meaningful and that includes a degree of
autonomy and recognised social status” (CIPD 2006)
Issues of dignity in the public sector
Over the past few decades the public sector has started to become more like the private sector
in numerous ways
...
“managerialism like any ideology, is defined by its
ends and the means used to achieve those ends” (Klikauer 2013)
Over recent years in the public sector organisations such as the NHS there have been various
factors have put more pressure onto members of staff
...
This was done to try and increase productivity but it might not necessarily
be a good idea
...
Shocking statistics arose in 2014
regarding the NHS and negligence
...
(McLelland 2015) This
could be down to the fact that many doctors and nurses may have rushed in order to meet deadlines put
in place by the NHS
...
This
level of intensity is not good for the dignity of their staff
...
In Davis’s journal article called “Turning on nursing
innovation to improve care and efficiency” it claims that big improvements were going to be made
to streamline the NHS nurses to be more effective and efficient
...
By
adding this extra pressure onto the nurses it can put them under a lot more stress than before
...
To
try and improve overall efficiency
...
This loss of jobs increases the work load onto remaining staff
...
Conclusion
In conclusion I feel that dignity is extremely important
...
If
people are treated without dignity it can affect then them in a whole range of problems, and can
even lead to serious health implications
...
However, although it is
obvious that all people deserve dignity and respect company’s still refuse to have dignity polices in
place in their organisations
...
I think that
organisations should put suitable dignity policies in place for the wellbeing of their employees
