Module: BIOM - 1006

Lecturer: Dr Rushworth

Date: 14/11/16

Cellular Respiration: Glycolysis
o

Glucose is the main source of energy in the human body, the symbol equation for respiration is:
 C6H12O6 + 6O2 ---> 6H2O + 6CO2

o

Cells need to release energy in slow segments and so need the ability to store the energy
...
This is done using triose
phosphate isomerase:
 Two molecules of glyceraldehyde 3-phospahte now continue down the pathway

o

Each glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate is now converted to 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate using the enzyme
‘glyceraldehyde 3-phospahte dehydrogenase’
...
This, therefore,
forms two pyruvate
molecules and 2 ATP
molecules
The net gain of ATP
therefore, is 4
The main point of this
process is to make
pyruvate, NOT ATP
