The Nervous System Part 1
o

The nervous system has 3 main, overlapping functions:
 Sensory input
 This is information gathered by sensory receptors such as baroreceptors or thermoreceptors
 Integration
 This is processing and interpretation of the information gathered by the sensory receptors
 Motor output
 This is the activation of effector organs which produces a reaction to the sensory
information, e
...
increase heart rate

o

The nervous system can be split into 2 main sections:
 The central nervous system (CNS)
 This includes the brain and spinal cord
 Its function is to integrate and process sensory input and coordinate responses to that
input
 The peripheral nervous system (PNS)
 This includes cranial nerves, spinal nerves and ganglia
 The PNS has two sensory divisions:
 Somatic sensory fibres
o Conveys impulses from the skin, skeletal muscles and joints etc
...
The sheath forms gaps known as nodes of
Ranvier
 In the CNS, the sheaths are formed by the processes of oligodendrocytes
