The Nervous System Part 2
Principals of Electricity
o
To understand nervous conduction, you must first understand the basic principles of electricity
Voltage
Voltage is a measure of the potential energy generated by separated charge at 2 points (V
or mV)
Current
The flow of an electrical charge (ions) across two points (Amps)
Resistance
Resistance is the hindrance to the charges flow (Ohms)
o
Ohm’s law
Ohm’s Law states that current is voltage divided by resistance
I = V/R
Neurophysiology
o
Neurones generate a variety of electrical signals that can encode, transmit and store information
By nature, however, neurones are not good conductors of electricity
They generate signals based on the flow of ions across their cell membrane
The resting membrane potential of a neurone is ~-70mV
Neurones generate and conduct action potentials along the length of the axon
These impulses carry information from one end to the other and across the whole nervous
system
o
Membrane proteins are responsible for allowing certain ions through the membrane and therefore for
maintaining the potential difference of the axon
