Key idea: All living organisms are composed of cells
...

The Cell Theory:
• all living things are composed of cells and cell products
• new cells are formed only by division of pre-existing cells
• cells contain inherited information; genes are used as instruction for
growth, functioning and development
• cell is the functioning unit of life = all chemical reactions take
place in the cell
⟹ the term ‘cell' was introduced by Robert Hooke
Exceptions to the Cell Theory:
• the alga Caulerpa consists of one multi-nucleated cell; its shape is maintained
by cell wall and microtubules
• muscle fibres form from the fusion of many myoblasts (= individual muscle
stem cells), producing a large multi-nucleated fibre
