GENDER  DISCRIMINATION
ð

IN  THE  WORKING  ENVIRONMENT

CÉZANNE  KOOTER

Mrs
...

Luckily there have been integrated a lot of organizations to protect people against
discrimination
...
One of them is from America and is
named The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which was build up in
1965
...
Another example of an organization is in the country
where I was born, The Netherlands, which is called the Equal Treatment Act (ETA)
...
This pushed the amount of discrimination down, but it
never came to a point where this problem is fully solved
...
Obviously, because of the way it was always seen that the man
was ranked above the woman, the amount of discrimination towards the female is way bigger
than towards men, but men also have to deal with this situation
...
Gender discrimination comes in a variety of forms
examples are sexual harassment, withholding promotions based on gender, giving a different
job title to a woman than to a man, and preventing women from participating in training
opportunities to improve themselves for a higher job title
...
It can cause lost productivity and destruction in the working
environment
...
According to a report written by Jodi L
...
Jokes about an employee’s gender
that imply inability, offensive jokes of a suggestive or sexual nature and jokes implying that
an employee’s work are sub-par due to his or her gender
...
(Gluck)
Victims of discrimination may also experience the feelings of strong indignation and
lose their confidence
...
And the first thing they will think about is causing destruction
...
(Gluck)
Men and women are different in a lot of ways, which is necessary to make a society,
but which also makes women in this world seen as the “weaker” gender
...
Examples of why women are seen as the
weaker gender are that us women are in most cases more emotional than men
...
Which for some jobs you may not get promoted or hired for jobs
that require physical strength
...
But because they are the one that have to
carry the baby in their belly, they are not a reliable source for the company to hire, because
after the baby is there the mother needs and wants to be there for her child
...
Companies see that as a non-reliable source for an important job
...
So women feel discriminated by the fact
that they are not valuable for the company just because they want to start a family
...
When a man is in the position of hiring

employees, they often seek to hire women not on our abilities, but the importance strikes to
the way we look
...
So these are just a few aspects discussed but you can see the point
...
According to a 2008 study by the U
...

Department of Labor, women earn on average 80 percent of what men earn
...
(Finn)
...
Dawn SoutoCoons was the woman who began a lawsuit against Sterling Jewelers
...
She loved her job and all the responsibilities that came with it
...
As she filed a form, she came across
paperwork for a recently hired co-worker
...
She checked another file, and then another, until she had
reviewed the records of each of the dozen or so sales staff members
...
Souto-Coons, then an assistant manager, were making more per hour than the
women
...
Souto-Coons, 55, is among 12 women in a suit against Sterling Jewelers,
parent of 12 chains in the United States, including Jared the Galleria of Jewelry and Kay
Jewelers
...
And the accusations
go further, portraying a workplace where sexual harassment and vulgar behavior left some
prosecutors feeling violated
...
After she would close a big sale, she
said, an assistant manager would announce that he had a “reward” for her, opening his legs
and telling her to sit on his lap
...
David Bouffard, a Sterling
spokesman, said in a statement that the company had investigated the claims in pay
discrimination lawsuits by the prosecutors and the EEOC
...
Bouffard said that Sterling investigated and took action when employees
raised concerns
...

The case dates to 2005, when a saleswoman filed a pay complaint with the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission
...
On March 10, a federal judge, who said the agency had not conducted a wide
enough investigation of Sterling, dismissed a related lawsuit, first brought by the commission
in 2008
...

Beyond the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission inquiry, the civil rights
division of the Department of Law and Public Safety in New Jersey found in 2009 probable
cause of discrimination at Sterling after a sales associate complained that a manager had
rubbed up against her
...
Sterling
told investigators that it had not been able to corroborate the allegations
...

In the pending case, the plaintiffs refer to sexual affairs involving the chief executive,
Mark Light, and subordinates, and describe a company meeting when Mr
...

Without referring to any specific employee, David Bouffard, a spokesman for Sterling,
said that some of the allegations “relate to personal, consensual relationships with individuals
who have never raised a concern with the company, or involve situations that already have
been thoroughly investigated and addressed
...
Light
...
Bouffard said that women were well
represented at Sterling, making up more than 70 percent of Sterling’s sales force and assistant
manager positions, and 60 percent of store manager positions
...
” Last week, Sterling announced that a woman,
Denise Shaffer, would take on the newly created role of Signet treasurer
...
Since 2002, 24 people have held the title of vice president for
regional operations, meaning they oversee store operations
...

Lisa McConnell, a plaintiff and former manager at a Kay store in Indiana, said she was
hopeful that the case would make a difference for women still at Sterling
...
This  due  to  the  variety  of  quotas,  laws  and  organizations  that
companies  have  to  follow,  to  protect  women  towards  discrimination
...
The  way  we  were  seen,  and  sometimes  still  are,  was  the  weaker
gender,  and  that  is  from  my  belief  due  to  the  fact  that  from  the  moment  work  was
implemented  in  the  world  till  the  end  of  the  15th  century,  the  woman  had  to  stay  home
to  take  care  of  the  household,  taking  care  of  the  children,  cooking  dinner,  and  making  the
man  happy
...

But  from  the  end  of  the  15th  –  beginning  of  the  16th  century,  women  had  the  urge  to  do
more  than  to  stay  home
...
 And  for  me,
this  has  been  a  great  evolution  in  the  world  because  from  that  time,  not  only  the
qualities  of  men,  but  also  of  women  could  be  used  to  improve  the  world  to  it  is  now
...

I  do  stand  for  the  reasons  the  women  give  of  why  they  feel  discriminated,  but  I
also  like  to  believe  that  sometimes  the  women  take  everything  for  discriminating
...
 It  is
not  really  discriminating  towards  the  woman  because  it  is  just  a  certain  kind  of  standard
that  is  put  there  for  that  type  of  job
...
