Running head: THE ROOM REVIEW
The Room Review

The Room is an independent film made by director/actor Tommy Wiseau
...
It is a film that one truly must witness in order to
grasp one of the greatest oddities in all cinema
...
Then we cut to the opening credits where the cast
shows Tommy Wiseau as a leading actor
...

The movie starts off with Johnny played by Wiseau walking through the door with some
flowers saying "Hi babe I've something for you
...

A young man named Danny who was taken in by Johnny comes through the door
...
Obviously they are
going to have sex which is rather rude and inconsiderate considering that a kid is downstairs with
nothing to do
...
" It is a very awkward scene to say the least
...
" Then Danny understands that Johnny and Lisa wish to be alone while they have sex and
he leaves
...
Next we have a gratuitous sex scene that is now at night even though it
was in the day earlier
...
Were they just
pillow fighting for hours and hours? The sex scene takes forever they keep on doing the
repetitive things
...
Even the sex itself is completely unnatural
...
This whole scene seems like a terrible sex tape
...

In another scene later on Lisa's mother comes over and she and Lisa speak about certain
things that are never spoken about in any detail such as what their jobs are and what they do
...
The mother’s acting is atrocious
to a level where it nearly seems she is reading the lines on the script
...
" Lisa then seduces Mark and even when it is completely
apparent that she is doing so Mark is still wondering what Lisa is doing
...

The next scene cuts very fast to where we see Johnny going to the store to buy some
flowers
...
The cashier says hi to Johnny and

says she did not recognize him
...

While it is nitpicking to criticize this scene it is still very interesting
...
Then he gets the
flowers and pays the cashier saying "Keep the change" (Wiseau, 2003) and rushes out the store
in such a fast and unusual way
...

Johnny comes back home and complains to Lisa about not getting his promotion
...

Lisa has another talk with her mother the next day and her mother mentions that she has
breast cancer
...
Her mother then asks how she and
Johnny are doing
...

Later on Johnny hears about the lie and he is extremely mad
...
Not one voice inflection is right,
4

The Room Review
not one word said correctly, not one breath of air is real
...

Johnny and Mark start talking about relationships and cheating
...
Johnny then laughs
inappropriately saying "What a story, Mark
...
Johnny laughs again inappropriately and says that Mark was feeling cranky
(Wiseau, 2003)
...
Johnny says "Tell me more"
and he does not appear to show any emotion about it
...
" He says there is nothing wrong with any of this and more people should love each other to
make the world better
...
People seem to be able to take any kind of shocking information and
simply accept it and be alright
...
Michelle warns
her not to do so and Lisa says let’s keep it a secret
...
Michelle then leaves the
residence and Johnny and Lisa get into a feud
...
The way this
feud is settled show over the top emotions, poor dialog, and the most ridiculous over the top

acting
...
Well not exactly
football, in reality they simply pass around the ball back and forth from a few feet away
...
Along with that Lisa
has another conversation with her mother that is the same as the others
...
It's another pointless scene because there is
nothing else to even talk about
...
The scene makes no sense at all and
seems very out of place
...

Speaking of awkward, that night Lisa invites Mark over another time and Mark is yet
confused again about what is going on even though Lisa and Mark have already been in this
situation before
...

In a later scene we see Johnny and the other guys playing football outside
...
There is nothing wrong
6

The Room Review
with this it is simply unusual that it is the only thing they ever do and it seems so pointless
...

In case this movie is not repetitive enough Lisa has yet another talk with her mother
where they discuss the same thing as in the other conversations
...
It seems absolutely pointless to have this same repetitive
scene where they talk about the exact same subject matter and continue to be in the same
mindsets afterwards
...
Not surprisingly someone catches them and
they get in trouble
...
Mark then asks Johnny, "What
planet are you on?" Which to be fair is the first legitimate question of the film
...
Johnny says he is fed up with the world and goes upstairs and
locks himself in the bathroom
...

Later Johnny kicks Lisa out then he throws the most over the top temper tantrum in
cinematic history
...
He
continues to throw things around and one can easily see how scripted this entire tantrum is
...
He then gets a gun and shoots
himself in the mouth (Wiseau, 2003)
...
Mark tells Johnny to wake up when clearly he is
dead and had shot himself in the mouth
...
Lisa then immediately asks if she still has Mark right after her fiancé Johnny died making
for a clumsy rebound considering she is the one that caused Johnny to commit suicide
...
This is very inappropriate of her to say
and very awkward to say the least
...
For someone to try to get with someone else literally over their fiancée’s dead body is
beyond insane and not displaying even basic humanity
...

The Room is one of the most peculiar movies in all cinema
...
This is not just a generic bad movie but an anomaly of film
...
The Room is something so unique
and interestingly bad that it had to come from the mind of someone who thinks and acts in such a
unique way
...
It is simply astounding how the people acting in this film can be so consistently bad
and constantly making mistakes
...
In many movies, even bad ones at least the actors will appear human in
nature but in The Room this is not so
...
How people can act this poorly
personally fascinates me
...
I believe it takes someone born with some kind of weird talent and odd mindset to
think of such a movie
...
The way that he talks, walks, laughs, speaks, as well as how he acts and
reacts is all incredibly unique
...
He says things that nobody else says like “huh” all the time and has a unique
laugh that he constantly makes even when something is not funny
...

For me The Room is a bad movie in the sense that it has a poor script, writing, dialogue,
acting, and more however, the way that it is put together and presented is so interesting and
enjoyable
...
This film, while being bad in a technical
sense, it is very enjoyable for me to watch
...
As terrible as it is it has a charm to it that really appeals to me
...
I like how they do crazy things that are
completely illogical
...
I even like the character Johnny as weird as he is
...

Even though this movie is so bad, it is interestingly bad and very enjoyable
...

It is like a sociological display showing how people would act if they were wired a different way
...
