We began with a little more than a fierce work ethic and a desire to do something
different and do it differently
In 1994, Scott Graham founded Frantic Assembly, alongside Steven Hoggett and
Vicki Middleton
...
They were
inspired by their peers and tutors to form their own theatre company, they say that it
was reckless and terrifying
...
Taught in High Schools and
Colleges around the country, Frantic Assembly gives students the opportunity to
involve themselves with theatre which involves acting, movement and daring stunts
...
As
the method developed over the following years, its way of devising theatre has
helped people to explore, understand and make work throughout the world
...
The 3 students who founded the
company were English Literature and Geography graduates
...
They devoured any opportunity which came their way, this is one of the
reasons they are labelled as one of the most successful theatre companies in Britain
...
They say that such a simple
starting point, based on encouragement, learning and training has been the sole
drive of the company from day 1
...
Frantic Assembly
also delivers an innovative vocational training
project for young men names Ignition
...
This project
reflects the founder s humble beginnings and is an excellent project which
encourages young men to involve themselves more with the production of arts
...

SCOTT GRAHAM
Scott Graham is now 44 years old
...
She is a favourite of
his and she has had many influences on his work,
including his site specific show of Dirty Wonderland
...
His aim was to create non-naturalistic pieces,
through the use of movement and music
...

Because he has never had any training but has always had a strong need to create
abstract forms of production arts, he has been able to drive him and his team to
create the most influential forms of theatre
...

There are no influences leading them to be like another company or another
practitioner
...
Because of his will to educate children and performers, the
company continues to drive forwards, creating a completely new style of theatre for
performers to be inspired by
...
He has won an Olivier
Award and an Obie Award
...

Steven co-founded Frantic Assembly in 1994 at Swansea University with 2 of his
peers
...
He had
absolutely no experience in theatre and when studying literature at University, he
challenged himself by creating a theatre company, unknowingly starting one of the
most prestigious theatre companies in the UK to date
...
This was based in Swansea and occurred just months before he
helped to develop his own Company based on theatre
...
Steven provided his
own artistic and unusual choreographic flair to the company which won him awards
in the future
...
Soon Frantic Assembly
were producing large scale tours and collaborating with some of the UK s biggest
theatre companies
...
Learn and Train is the heart of their
company, anything they learn, they teach and educate other people
...
The accessibility of The Frantic method has empowered and
inspired people to participate, educate, collaborate and make thrilling work
...

This commitment to Learn and Train has been building the future of theatre makers for
over 22 years
-

Experience what it is like to be an actor in a Frantic Assembly rehearsal room – this
gives young people to opportunity to experience theatre with no required
experiences and no pressure to be the best
...

-

Meet new people and work together to create material for performance
...

-

Develop new physical and devising skills
...
Over
time this will have progressed to explore more recent events
...
This gives children the opportunity to discover theatre in a more
prestigious way compared to the opportunities the founders of the company ever
had
...

Frantic Assembly s working and training methods are very relaxed
...
In workshops, they allow young
people to share ideas and create theatre based on cultural, social and political events, just as
many theatre practitioners do
...
This allows them to create a more understanding piece,
in turn educating the audience about cultural and social debates within their own societies
...
The fearless attitude is something
which started the company
...
It also takes a lot of courage to work with
strangers,

Collaboration –

Frantic Assembly are constantly looking for input on

their performances, their techniques, their styles and their approach to theatre
...
They work a lot with their performers to allow
them to work freely, this helps to develop initial ideas into
a larger performance
...
They consult
with Project Managers, Education and Participation
Managers and a large production team to help them get
their message and training accessible to anyone who requires it
...
The Curious
Incident of the Dog in the Night Time is an excellent
example of this
...
Not only does this educate the audiences but it
also helps to build an awareness of illnesses and helps
people to understand what other people have to live with
on a day to day basis
...
In my research I have found several principles and rules which Frantic
Assembly sticks to in order to ensure that their performances and workshops
continue to strive towards their main themes and creative appreciations
...
I think it s
important to tackle some of the social issues so that audiences all over the world can
start to have a greater realisation of some of the problems their peers face on a daily
bases
...
They do not necessarily perform
plays based around cultural situations howevere the fact that they perform all
around the world and in front of hundreds of cultures, this tells us that they are very
comminted to helping people from all walks of life
...
I think this is a sensible
decision because a lot of people don t affiliate themselves with politics
...

Historical & Economical:
Frantic Assembly don t focus their productions around Historical events because
they tend to move towards the future
...

Summary
Frantic Assembly as a company has helped to shape Physical Theatre significantly
over the years it has been running
...
Their aesthetics have helped to shape workshops all over the world,
these never changing principles help to keep focus and drive throughout all of their
rehearsals and productions
...

I think Frantic Assembly are going to continue to grow, their performances are so
unique and dynamic that audiences will always be interesting to experience the
underlying messages of what their shows have to offer
...
One example of this is
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time , this production captures the inside
of a child s mind and portrays it in a way audiences all over the world can
understand and start to become more empathetic
...
The physical movement is interesting
for young children however the movement and the messages behind it also appeals
to adults because they can appreciate the messages behind the choreography
...
Especially
because their work focuses a lot on pre-existing books or stories, this enables them to
produce a different perspective on a story people are already familiar with
...
