Atoms:
• Protons: +1
• Neutrons: 0
• Electrons: -1
Cations = positive – less electrons
Anions = negative – more electrons
Atomic number = protons and electrons
Mass number = protons + neutrons
Electron shells: 2, 8, 8 (always has all shells but not always full)
Must have full outer shells (inert gases only ones that exist separately)

into oxygen which by accepting electrons and protons together is reduced to water

o Gain of electrons coincides with loss of oxygen

Rate of reaction
• Kinetics: study of rates of reactions
o Speed gauged by how much reactant is changed or how much product is formed in a given
time
• Factors affecting rate of reaction:
o Increased by:
§ Increasing concentration of reactants

§ Increasing temperature = gives reactants kinetic energy to break bonds

§ Using catalysts (biological = enzymes) = gives reactants alternative rout to form

• In chemical reactions existing bonds break and new ones form = ACTIVATED COMPLEX and
