Biochem study notes
Atoms:
• Protons: +1
• Neutrons: 0
• Electrons: -1
Cations = positive – less electrons
Anions = negative – more electrons
Atomic number = protons and electrons
Mass number = protons + neutrons
Electron shells: 2, 8, 8 (always has all shells but not always full)

Must have full outer shells (inert gases only ones that exist separately)
• Electronegativity: amount of attraction between atoms
...
Electrons make it to end of chain transferred
into oxygen which by accepting electrons and protons together is reduced to water
• Gain & loss of oxygen
o Gain of electrons coincides with loss of oxygen
o 2CuO + C à 2CU +CO2
Rate of reaction
• Kinetics: study of rates of reactions
o Speed gauged by how much reactant is changed or how much product is formed in a given
time
• Factors affecting rate of reaction:
o Increased by:
§ Increasing concentration of reactants
§ Increasing pressure
§ Increasing temperature = gives reactants kinetic energy to break bonds
§ Light
§ Using catalysts (biological = enzymes) = gives reactants alternative rout to form
new bonds
• In chemical reactions existing bonds break and new ones form = ACTIVATED COMPLEX and
energy required to do this = ENERGY OF ACTIVATION
Basic biochem
Elements: Carbon forms v stable chains and rings in combination with other elements such as hydrogen,
oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur & phosphate
