TITLE
Hardness Testing of Metallic Materials
...
INTRODUCTION
Rockwell Hardness test is an indentation hardness test using a verified machine to force a
diamond spheroconical indenter or tungsten carbide (or steel) ball indenter, under specified condition,
into the surface of the material under test, and to measure the difference in depth of the indentation as
the force on the indenter is increased from a specified preliminary test force to a specified total test
force and then returned to the preliminary test force
...
Rockwell hardness number is an arbitrary number derived from the net increase in the depth of
indentation as the force on an indenter is increase from a specified preliminary test force to a specified
total test force and then returned to the preliminary test force (this number may correlate to tensile
strength, wear resistance, ductility, and other physical characteristics of metallic materials, and may be
useful in quality control and selection of materials) and may not represent the physical characteristics
of the whole part of the product

...
PROCEDURE
First, the diamond indenter was fixed to the Rockwell Hardness Instrument
...
Second, scale was turning to 0
...
When the specimen was touched the indenter then the Rockwell scale was increased
...
Then the indicator was come to the red spot in
small scale
...
Then the larger scale was showed Rockwell number of the
hard steel

The experiment was done for different points of hard steel

DISCUSSION
Hardness is property of the material
...
A hardness property value is the result of a defined measurement procedure
...
The
Rockwell hardness test method is easier to perform and more accurate than other hardness testing
methods
...
But those results give averagely similar
results to us
...
The hardness is changing in different
temperatures
...
The manufacturing processes and quality requirements for product made using high-tech
materials call for a comprehensive knowledge of process technology in addition to thorough
knowledge of the material’s properties
...
There are several types of hardness testing
...
Among these hardness testing, we consider the Rockwell hardness test
...
When we discussed about hardness testing experiment we can be taking about Civil
Engineering sector
...
A Civil
engineer is dealing with buildings, bridges and etc
...
There are some industrial examples for the Civil engineering side
...
Metallic cables are used to transmit
electric power
...
There are some uses of Nickel material in electronic engineering sector
...
Temperature is the most important factor in The Rockwell hardness testing
...
It had used hardest metal in room temperature
...
Then hardness was changed
...
We discussed this example at lap class
...
Hardness testing is significance in
structural, aerospace, automotive, quality control, failure analysis and many other forms of
manufacturing and industry
...
Hardness testing is a most used form of materials test
...
When
comparison to other types of material verification equipment, it’s typically minimally or
completely non-destructive, and most of the instrumentation is inexpensive
...
Recently, significant uses in hardware, electronics, and software has led to much more
sophisticated hardness testing equipment that can quickly, reliably, and with extreme precision,
provide useful and property critical information
...
We can collect some information from
hardness testing
...
1
...
2
...
Now we discuss about those ways
...
There are several
important to us
...
Test hardenability
...
Can be used to predict Tensile strength
...
That was Functionality
...
Test to confirm ability to function as designed
...
Toughness
...
There are another several important of hardness testing,
You get to know if the specimen you are using is appropriate for the job
...
Another advantage of hardness testing is that it can be performed on lighter and less
expensive equipment
...
Because safety is the
one of very important thing
...
After that we can think about cost
...
Now we discuss about how to improve the accuracy of the hardness test
...
Because if we take different types of metal to this
hardness testing then we will get various results
...
It will be the most accurate result of this experiment
...
Because the hardness is depend on the depth
...
After that we can use specific
temperature to calculate hardness
...
The indenter of the Rockwell tester should 10 times rather than the minimum thickness of
sample
...
So these are my suggestions to this experiment to improve the accuracy of the
hardness test
...
There for engineers should have a good knowledge about the quality of metals
...
The tensile strength,
resistance,
Hardness and etc
