Different types of Plate movement
Constructive (divergent)

The plates are moving apart from each other
o The magma moves up and creates new land
Normally oceanic plates
o An example is the Mid-Atlantic ridge
This type of plate movement creates Earthquakes, shield volcanoes and islands

Conservative (transform)

The plates slide past each other
o This creates fault lines
 The San Andreas fault line
This causes pressure to build up and be released as earthquakes

Destructive (convergent)

This occurs when an Oceanic plate hits a Continental plate
o The Oceanic plate slides under the lighter Continental plate

o

As the Oceanic plate sinks it creates a subduction zone where magma rises to the
surface
 This could create composite volcanos
The friction of the plates sliding beneath each other causes a build a up of pressure which is
released as earthquakes
The Nazca plate is currently being forced under the South American plate

Collision zones

This is a form of destructive plate movement between two Continental plates
Both plates have the same density and form fold mountains
