Motivation

Lecture 1

Definition: “A set of processes that arouse, direct and maintain human behaviour towards
attaining some goal”- Baron, 2003

Types:
Trait; constant- stable personality characteristic- motivational disposition
State; temporary motivational response or condition (Intrinsic/Extrinsic)

Intrinsic;
- motivated for themselves (engage for no reward other than own interest)
- make it interesting & enjoyable in classroom to motivate them
- activity itself is the source of motivation
- motivation is self-applied

Extrinsic;
- motivated through reward/anticipated consequences
- source of motivation is the consequence, not the behaviour itself
- performed to acquire material/social awards or avoid punishment
- applied by others

Meta-analysis results show that rather than focusing on rewards in
students learning, we should focus on how to facilitate intrinsic
motivation
Behaviour not strictly influenced by one or the other; often an aspect of both
extrinsic and intrinsic motivation (seeking a reward but also getting something)
Teachers should aim to increase intrinsic motivation
Both intrinsic and extrinsic are necessary for learning

Psychoanalytic theory of Motivation


All actions and behaviours are a result of internal instincts that drive them
o People are often unaware of the reason for their actions causing internal
conflicts

Behavioural theory of Motivation

- Based on rewards and reinforcement
o Consistent and constant reinforcement of specific behaviours helps children
to develop certain habits or behaviours
