Microevolution is the slight changes in allele frequencies, and is short term
Macroevolution is the changes above the species level, and is long term
o Leads to big changes between populations and speciation
A species is a basic unit of biodiversity, but there are different definitions/concepts
o Morphological species concept: individuals that look similar are the same species
o Biological species concept: individuals that can interbreed and produce viable
offspring belong to the same species
▪ Plants and animals can hybridize between species though
Each species is in some way distinct from other things
o Looks different, has different behaviors, has different physiology, etc
Speciation occurs over large time scales
o Two populations of the same species become isolated from each other and
evolve independently
