MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
TESTIS
-

-

produce spermatozoa in seminiferous tubules and androgens
septa divide the testis into ~ 250 incomplete lobules and meet
towards posterior border at tunica albuginea
each lobule contains 1-4 semineferous tubules covered by
complex stratified epithelium embedded in connective tissue
stroma
- each tubule contains Sertoli cells and spermatogenic cells
- tunica albuginea = thick fibromuscular connective tissue
capsule
inner vascular layer = tunica vasculosa
Sertoli cells = simple columnar epithelial cells which extend from
basement membrane to lumen are joined by tight junctions and
produce protein which concentrates testosterone
- Blood testis barrier = large molecules cant pass
between basal and adluminal compartments – so developing
sperm cells are isolated from blood
- Leydig/ myloid/ interstitial cells, squamous contractile cells are
found on basement membrane, cause peristaltic waves and make
testosterone
