Basic Anatomy of the Respiratory system
Gross anatomy of the respiratory system:
System of tubes that conduct air from
atmosphere to alveoli
Also conducts expired air from alveoli to
atmosphere
Designed to work alongside enormous
atmospheric pressure
conceptually divided broadly into 2 airconducting passages arranged in series,
anatomically divided into:
o upper respiratory tract
nasal cavity
pharynx
larynx
o lower respiratory tract
trachea
primary bronchi
lungs
both have different
epithelia
The upper respiratory tract:
part of the respiratory tract that lies above the sternal angle (angle of louis; palpable)
includes:
o nostrils
o nasal cavity
o paranasal sinuses
o mouth
o pharynx
o hypopharynx
o larynx
Sternal Angle of Louis:
anatomical features:
o manubriosternal joint
vertebral T4/T5 Intervertebral Disc (Angle of Louis)
o terminal point of trachea into Left & Right Main Bronchi
sternal angle of louis, T4/T5 IV Disk
SA of it coincides w/ aortic arch
Divides into supra & infra compartments
