LEADERSHIP ROLES
Learning aim A: understanding the roles, qualities, and characteristics of an effective sports leader
Learning aim B: examine the importance of psychological factors and their link with effective
leadership

TEACHER
A teacher is a practitioner who gives new knowledge to participants through a variety of
methods and techniques
...
E
...

A PE teacher is responsible for planning, deliver and assess school curriculum
...
They teach a range of different sports and provide
young people with an opportunity to develop and improve their social and physical skills
...
It will be useful for a teacher because a good rapport will ensure
that communication is easier, and it will allow your students to confine in you if they are
having trouble
...
A teacher can apply this by listening to your students and comfort them or just have a
generally good relationship with your students by being kind, understanding and strict
...
If a teacher does not have a good rapport, with their
students it would mean they won’t be able to confide in their teacher (you) whenever they
are having trouble in your class, and eventually not progress in your class; or not just enjoy
your classes
...

Confidence, this is when a teacher is able to feel or belief that one can have faith in or relies
on someone or something
...
As a teacher, you could improve your
confidence by leading and planning your own session and do a run through your sessions

and ensuring that everything runs smoothly
...
For
instance if you come across a teacher who has good confidence, you can tell by if they have
a clear loud voice, and is teaching their knowledge clearly so that their students can
understand
...
For an example, if you are teaching a class where there are some
children who would take any teachers for granted but you as a teacher are not able to
supress their bad behaviour (which would affect the other students and probably prevent
them from getting their best grades) just because you don’t have confident in yourself to
speak up and tell them off and processed with the lesson professionally; then you would
gain your respect because your students can see that you know what you are teaching them
because you are confident about your teaching
...
Although communication is split
into verbal communication – communication that takes place using spoken words and nonverbal communication – communication that comes through gestures, facial expressions,
eye contact, posture or tone of voice
...
So that they can understand what the teacher is teaching by, breaking the
information down so that they can understand it in their own way
...
Although this skill quality can vary within
different people for that some teachers would speak loud and clear, but quickly but others
can speak slow and clear but quietly
...
In physical education non – verbal communication is key when teaching a
new skill
...
When teachers teach physical education they tend to use this skill more
often when they are demonstrations of the skill that is needed within the sport
...

A teacher also needs to be organised, in other words this is being punctual, resourced and
has done a background research
...
It will as well make you look more professional and create
less stress for the teacher to get the right things at the right time, whilst leaving your
students on their own
...
And arranging their entire lesson plan in order
the day before
...
In order to improve one’s organisation they can make sure

that they have folders/files, post stick notes, dividers, wallets and etc to divide the tasks they
have either in order or in sections or both
...
For instance, if
you have not organised your lesson plan, it would reflect on you as a teacher on not being
focused on the teaching aims, then your students will take advantage of you as it will express
you to be unprofessional (as a teacher) for that you have not organised their lesson
...

Another skill that is compulsory for a teacher is giving feedback to your students; this is
when you are being attentive to your students’ performance by giving the positive and
negative part of the evaluation of their performance
...
It
encourages students to improve their performance more and allows the students to know
where they are going wrong and how to improve
...
You can see
when a teacher is giving their feedbacks when a teacher talks to their students on one to
one, write an evaluation on the task you have set for them
...

The qualities needed to become a good and successful teacher are:
A good and skilful teacher would be knowledgeable about the activities and the technical
aspects of the aims of how to achieve the skill that a teacher is trying to aim when leading
her/his students
...

Although a teacher has to have knowledge of the rules and laws about an activity, which is
intended to keep players safe and ensure they play fairly
...
For
example, you would have referees in football and they would call out players for foul play
and either give them a yellow or a red card and call out a penalties; they do this to maintain
a fair play throughout the match
...

Knowledge of the techniques, strategies and tactics, that is specific and unique to the
activity a teacher would be teach to students in small broken sections of a strategy,

technique or tactics
...
For an example, the
teacher would explain the rules of a game before they play and call out for any broken rules
during the game/activity, to prevent injury
...
And if you don’t know how to teach them the
tactics of the activity then they your students would not know how to win within the
activity
...
Teachers can improve and gain more understanding about
their students through counselling and meeting their parents; this would allow you as a
teacher to understand their student’s background and most predictable behaviour traits
that they may have and just having regular counselling would allow a teacher to understand
the students fairs and concerns
...

In order for a teacher to understand their students you need to be empathetic for your
students
...
A teacher can apply this by
listening to their student’s worries and concerns and understand their situation
...
Being goal orientated as a teacher gives the teacher a focus and strategies on how
to work in the most effective way; in order to avoid any accidents for that they know that
they are responsible for everything that is happening
...

Not only are these goals set for the students but for the teacher themselves; for they can set
deadlines on where they have to submit all their students work to their bosses
...
If a teacher is not goal orientated, the would lose focus on what they have to teach
to their students which could conclude in the end that you are not making any progression
on teaching your students new knowledge or skills
...
It is vital that teachers develop strategies for coping
with stressful and challenging situation
...

Being patient allows you as a teacher to build a good rapport with a student and make
yourself more approachable, for that being level-headed with your students, shows the
students that you do care for them and understand them
...
If you as a teacher is not patient, then your
students could feel uncomfortable in your lessons because they were not able to catch up
with your speed when teaching to the whole class; then they would feel left behind and they
could feel that their presence is unimportant
...
In
the end your students won’t have learnt anything from your lessons and the overall class
grade will go down
...
In order for a teacher to achieve this they would have to be
friendly and easy to talk to, in other words a teacher needs to be approachable
...
A teacher who always smiles and is friendly, and who is also a very good listener
makes a teacher approachable
...
If a
teacher does not understand their students then, you as a teacher will not be able to
understand the ways on how to motivate your students and ways on how to get over their
anxieties and get them to participate in your lessons
...
This is important as for a teacher because it
promotes fairness and ensures that the students feels equal and valued
...
If a teacher is not consistent, then it could create problems
within your students because you could be treating a student more favourable than others,
and cause unfairness, because one student is more valued then another
...
Teachers who are role models
to their students is an essential skill that is needed when working with children as they
imitate the conduct of their teacher
...
If a teacher does not portray themselves as a role model
towards their students, then your students would not know how to behave within your class
or in society in general, this is because if you were to work for children (for instance), they
would like to mimic on everything you do, for an example, if you were to swear in every
sentence whenever you spoke then the children would do the same because they think it is
ok
...
A
teacher who is committed not only to their job but to their students as well, it shows to
his/her students that they can rely on their teacher because they will do the best as they
can to support them, for that they know that their teachers are 100% committed
...
If a teacher is not committed, it
would show to the students they are not being valued and considered and eventually lose
their respect for you as a teacher
...
In other words a teacher who
promotes and ethical and having integrity
...
if a teacher does not promote the right from the wrong, then the students would
not understand the wrong behaviour within a class and end up disturbing your lessons
...
Is
important, because it means that you are guiding them on how to do the things that are
expected of the student
...
In other words teachers use this skill when they are
demonstrating a new skill to his/her students
...

The important skills needed to be a good teacher:

The three most important skills that I believe a teacher must enquire is have a good rapport,
communication and knowledge
...
A teacher need to have a good rapport with their
students, because that relationship you have built with your student, makes you become
approachable enough for a student to trust you with a sensitive matter
...
A teacher has to be able to communicate verbally in order to explain
the teaching points to his/her students
...
So obviously that is a must for a teacher
...

Thirdly, a teacher needs to be knowledgeable because their job is to gives new knowledge
to their students through a variety of methods and techniques
...
And in order for you to successfully teach your students to the level that
they can grasp what you are teaching them, you would need to understand and know your
students
...

The Psychological Factors
External physiological factors
Team cohesion is the degree to which individual members want to contribute to the group's
ability to continue as a functioning work unit
...
Team cohesion
can be split into 2 forms and as a teacher they need to have a strong social cohesion - is
when a group works together through mutual respect for one another and often very simply
because members enjoy each other’s company
...

As a teacher social cohesion within a class/school means you are able to respect people
despite their age, gender, disability, etc
...
This allows the students to approach their teacher, without feeling judged;
making them feel comfortable to approach their teacher to confine in their teacher
...
However not everyone feels comfortable enough to approach you and tell you
about themselves, because they might not trust you enough
...
Everyone is different and no two personalities are ever the
same, but it is possible to generalise individuals into two categories introverts and
extroverts
...
They are often drawn to individual activity where they can get
training done on one-to-one or in small groups
...
As
teacher you can generally tell if you are an introvert, if your teaching style is more of a
lecture who feed all the necessary information they would need to excel in their exam and
don’t do much interaction with your students or even have them interacting with each
other
...
However, some students may not like that
teaching style and prefer to work in groups to get different opinions across and having a
conversation with a teacher to see what their teachers point of view is and allow the
student to make a judgement on which is best
...

Introverts can improve their way are projected to others by being more sociable to others
(not more open and completely change yourself to become an extrovert) and talk and
communicate to others
...
However, could prevent you to know
your students and understand what makes them to be the students who they are and could
create a misunderstanding with your students, because you may not give them the chance
to express themselves
...

Motivation is a reason or reasons for acting in a particular way
...
Those sort of people are motived by the pleasure
of participating; this is known as being intrinsically motivated
...
Teachers who are able to avoid
distraction of extrinsic motivation will often find that they are able to perform in a less
inhibited manner, under less pressure and ultimately often succeed over others within their
career
...
This would become an extrinsic motivation for that
you believe that you have achieved a reward for being a good teacher
...
However, if you as a teacher is not motivated you may feel pressured, resulting to
stress, then eventually lead to depression, which can affect your career progression and
reputation
...
Your students would not want to
participate in your class and eventually not learn anything from you, and then your class
overall performance will become low
...

Confidence is the belief that you can be successful at performing an activity
...
A lack of
confidence will affect motivation, increase anxiety and reduce the level at which a teacher is
teaching their class
...
Whether you’re anxious because you’re teaching a topic you are unsure of or
don’t know the topic in depth, or you are dealing with that class; you as a teacher have to
be confident to successfully go through these struggles that you may face every day as a
teacher
...
This could affect the student’s grades and then eventually, affect
your reputation as a teacher
...
You
can improve your confidence

Internal psychological factors
Attribution theory is where people have a theory which supposes that people attempt to
understand the behaviour of others by attributing feelings, beliefs, and intentions to them
...
As a teacher you would tend to use attribution theory and self-confidence when
judging your students overall behaviour, in order to give you a greater understanding on
how to deal and work around your students to achieve the goal you would have set for your
class
...
However, if your selfconfidence is too high and you act in a certain way because you believed that one of your
student for an example was not speaking in class because they didn’t want to and then you

start to pick on them more
...
You can improve this by judging your beliefs on solid facts, so that it would prevent
you from behaving in a certain way because you thought that you judged that person right
...
When a teacher’s career is very successful with minimal
casualties concerning a student, it will sometimes seem the teacher can become arrogant
and proud
...
A teacher
with a past experience would make certain decisions for their students for their own good
and prevent something bad from happening
...
To make sure that your
past experience does not penetrate in your work, you have make sure that you learn from
your mistake and use that knowledge in the most effective way, and you must always
communicate with your students and your co-workers
...
Our normal behaviour is how our personality is perceived, i
...
whether we are
naturally grumpy, happy, or excitable
...
If a teacher has bad behaviour, such as lack of interest in
teaching, then your students will not listen to you, or take you seriously
...
However, if you enjoy teaching then it will allow you
as a teacher to communicate and guide your student to become successful, hence you have
carried out your role as a teacher
...
This is known as intentional behaviour
...
If you don’t have something to
eat then, it would be preferable to warn your students of your state and apologies to them,
making sure that they understand and don’t hold any sort of grudges if you lose your
temper to them
...

Forms of leadership
Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in
individuals and social systems
...
There are 4
components to transformational leadership and teachers tend to be more of an
individualised consideration component – individuals within a transformational leader’s
team are recognised and their ideas appreciated
...
This sort of leadership
means that you are creating etiquettes and social standards within the classroom, so that
everyone can follow them in order to maintain a good relationship
...
Leading transformational mans you
have the passion to teach and is concerned about the process of reaching your target as a
teacher as achieving the actual goal
...
Although not all will
become supportive and can freely communicate with others, for that they may suffer from
anxieties
...
As a teacher your form of leadership is
transactional because you are supervising your students when they are studying, as well as
organising their activities for the day
...
Being\ a transactional leader means that
your students are learning new knowledge and are focused on their tasks
...
However, some students may find it a burden and
are not motivated at all to learn for that they may always have been punished and has never
received a reward
...

Personal trainers/instructors are required in the sport industry because they possess the
knowledge, skills and abilities for safe and effective exercise and fitness program design,
instruction and assistance for those who have purpose of reaching personal health and
fitness goals
...

Personal trainers/instructors discuss the need and asses their client’s fitness, taking into
account any current medical conditions or constraints
...

They will set a long-term and short-term goals Short-term goals are measurable factors,
such losing a certain amount of pounds, toning up specific body parts or increasing the
amount of weight you can lift within a matter of weeks
...
Make a plan to achieve your short-term and longterm fitness goals
...
To show you how it is done
correctly because Body position is key with most exercises, and it’s a personal trainer’s job
to monitor you, make sure you’re doing the exercises safely and effectively and to alter the
program as necessary
...

The skills needed to become a successful team a personal trainer/instructor
are:
Having a good rapport with your clients is useful because it will allow you to have a good
communication, making it easier to successfully meet the objectives of your clients
...
Having a good rapport can be developed by being
friendly and open to your client and listen and respect to what your client is saying
...

Confidence is vital as a personal trainer, without confidence you won’t be able to take
charge of your sessions and gain trust from your clients or even be able to demonstrate the
exercise to your class during the session, then you won’t be able to teach new skills/
techniques to your clients
...
Confidence within a personal trainer/instructor is usually shown
more through the experience that you have earned as a personal trainer/instructor, because
you have likely come across different people and situations and you would know how to
deal with them for that from your experience as a personal trainer/instructor
...
Eventually losing their
trust and interest in your skills
...
If a personal trainer/instructor delivers their training sessions
without planning and preparations then they won’t be able to deliver their training sessions
successfully because they wouldn’t know what to do because they don’t have a detailed
plan
...
Organisation skills can be shown through by
being punctual to the training sessions, being resourced (so having your session plan with
you) and have done your background research – anything that can affect your training
sessions (by analysing your client’s forms, their health history)
...
When a personal trainer is organised it shows
to your clients that you have considered them and made a training session that is suitable
and most effective for them and that you enjoy your work, meaning that you are sincere in
what you were planning
...

Giving feedback is vital as a personal trainer/instructor, for that they must be sure that they
are meeting the targets set to meet the ultimate goal and they must not be misconceptions

to cloud their judgement otherwise their targets won’t be effectively meet, then eventually
ending up dealing the pace on meeting your goal
...
This skill can be shown through when you as a personal
trainer/instructor is being attentive about your clients performance and discus their weak
points and strong points and advise them the way on improving their weaknesses and
developing their strengths
...

A personal trainer/instructor has to be a motivator for their client’s because it is part of
their job
...
Considering the fact that some people don’t like to
exercises because if the pain it will cause them and they generally don’t like to sweat,
personal trainer/instructor are there to cheer their client’s on and encourage them to stay
focused on their goal
...
If a personal trainer does not know how to
motivate their clients then their clients will eventually lose interest in their training sessions,
because it would create an atmosphere where your client would be on their working
environment, which would mean that the client has to find a way to motivate themselves
(some people would eventually give up and not try at all), which is not what you want as a
personal trainer, because when motivating them it would mean you are pushing them
harder to achieve their goal through the training programme you made for them (where
your client can find in the internet and create their own) and get the praise from it
...
Being able to engage with someone means
that you are able to occupy or attract someone for their attention
...
It is very important to
keep them engaged when showing your client a new skill because your client need to make
sure that they are doing it correctly so that they won’t injury themselves in anyway because
they didn’t pay attention to you
...

The qualities needed to become a good and successful team personal
trainer/instructor are:
Knowledge is an important skill as a manger because a trainer/instructor needs to be able to
teach and demonstrate their new skill to their client in the correct technique to prevent any
injuries and will also project your professionalism to your clients
...
As a trainer/instructor you would most
likely be self-employed therefore you would need to know the rules and regulations of your
business – keeping your qualifications legal will prevent from losing your trust and
reputation as trainer/instructor
...
And obviously a trainer/instructor must have
knowledge about the techniques on how to do the exercises correctly so that it will be
effective on achieving the client’s goal, need to know about the strategies on how to
develop the exercise that will be effective on your client’s body, and the tactics of the
exercises
...

Being empathetic towards your client is also important because your client could be
stressed on their concerns which can affect their performance; this is because stress can
cause high blood pressure (then lead to heart attack)
...
This also make your bond with your client stronger as hey will feel
more valued and understood
...

Understanding the physical needs of your clients is necessary because it will prevent any
injury and allow to develop your session plans, so that it won’t stop your clients meeting
their personal goals
...

If these physical needs are not maintained then it can affect your client’s performance and
slow their pace on meeting you client’s goal which could affect their private life, for an
example your clients goal is to lose a certain amount of wait before her wedding and that
goal is not meet because of her physical needs then it will affect her and your reputation as
a personal trainer/instructor who is not able to take into the consideration of your client’s
needs
...
For that it will make your clients think that you the trainer/instructor

believe in you and that they can make it because you the trainer/instructor know can make
it
...
If a personal trainer does not stay positive during their training
session with their clients then it could influence her/his client to be negative during their
training session and affect them and become less motivated to do the training session
properly
...
Goal orientation is the degree to
which a person or organization focuses on tasks and the end results of those tasks
...

Having a goal will allow you and your client to focus and work effectively as they can
...
Without personal trainers/instructors
people with health issues would not know how to exercise safely and effectively and end up
either damaging their own health that’s why setting targets to reach their goals will help
them to achieve your client’s personal goals
...

Having patient is necessary with personal trainer/instructor because you will come across
clients who struggle to grasp your instructions needs time to learn and there are others who
are just disruptive or unmotivated
...
Being able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or
suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious is when you know that you are able to stay
patient
...

Then you won’t be able to achieve the targets that you have set for your clients
...

A personal trainer/instructor needs to get the best out of your client so you need to
understand how to motivate and their anxieties, then make ways on how to work around
those areas
...

Your client can sense if you are approachable when you smile all the time, listens to your
client without judging them and you are interested in them (your client)
...
If a personal trainer is not approachable,
their clients won’t be able to discuss their difficulties during a training session, which can
affect their progress
...
You yourself as a personal trainer/instructor can
become the role model for your client
...
Your client can either see your physical
side – which is what they most likely will be looking at as they want to imitate your figure,
your personal side – by imitating your life skills such as your manners or your lifestyle
choices on like your diet, hours of sleep, how much water you drink etc
...
If a personal
trainer is not aspiring, then client won’t feel any sort of motivation or competitiveness on
being like you (your physical state), which could be what your client is aspiring to
...
Although an exercise and fitness program can’t be
designed if a personal trainer/instructor is not committed to support and help reach their
clients personal goals
...
If personal trainer is not committed to their job, their client would think that
you as a personal trainer is a joke and they won’t take you seriously
...

The important skills needed to be a good personal trainer:
The three most important skills that I believe a personal trainer must enquire are having a
good confidence, be a good motivator and have a good organisational skill
...
Having good confidence,
naturally allows you to project your voice out to those who may find it difficult to hear you;
it also portrays to your client(s) that you know what you are doing and you are determined
to succeed in your training sessions for your client(s), who has a personal fitness goal
...
If you as a personal trainer are not confident

it will make it difficult to carry out your training sessions plans and gain your client(s) trust
...

Secondly, when a personal trainer is a good motivator, it means that you push your client(s)
to keep going without hesitations or to many breaks that could affect their client(s) personal
fitness goal
...
Which
eventually build and drive your client(s) to strive forward and completing the training
sessions
...
This is because when you
are organised especially for a personal trainer it will give you a focus and directs you what
your client(s) need and want
...
) to ensure that you are making a safe training
programme that could affect their health
...
So being thorough and organised can prevent any sort of injury or
health risks that could possible take your licence as a personal trainer away
...
Members of cohesive teams have emotional
and social bonds that link them to one another and to the group as a whole
...
Personal trainers need to have a
strong social cohesion in order to be respected and create a good relationship with their
clients, because the clients will also respect you back, which prevents any sort of conflict
from occurring
...
and create a bonding of
understanding and mutual respect with one another, this allows you as a personal trainer to
get along with people on a positively
...
The positive thing about social cohesion is that you are

respected therefore you feel valued in society
...

A personal trainer also needs task cohesion which is the degree to which a group works
together to reach goal, which is the clients fitness goals in the personal trainer case
...
Doing this will allow you and your client to stay
focused on achieving the set goal
...
Although social loafing may occur this is when an individual
within the group does not perform as well as their personal ability might suggest, causing
some of their workload to move onto the rest of the group, therefore the rest of the group
would have to work harder
...

Our personality is how we are projected to others, through the combination of
characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character and affects how we
interact with those around us
...
Introvert tend to be quieter, less verbally communicative and unlikely to
promote their own success
...
And extrovert tend to be very outgoing,
communicative and enjoy social situations, they are often drawn to team activities
...
Having
a personality as a personal trainer can motivate your client in different ways to work harder
...
Likewise if you were an extrovert as a personal trainer you are able to express your
opinion and correct your client’s mistakes, although your personality can also get in the way
of your client and make them feel uncomfortable
...
This relates to how
much you read and know
...
No one can read about or know everything, so it's refreshing for your client to learn
from you about those things that your client may not have time to learn about other thing
...

Motivation is a reason or reasons for acting in a particular way
...
Those sort of people are motived by the pleasure

of participating; this is known as being intrinsically motivated
...
Being motivated as a personal trainer
will mean that you are driven and focused to carry out your role with your best effort
...
The
positive thing about being motivated is that it gives you a focus on achieving your role,
however not being motivated as a persona trainer would mean that you could lose your
focus or even your purpose
...

Confidence is the belief that you can be successful at performing an activity
...
A lack of
confidence will affect motivation, increase anxiety and reduce the level at which an
individual can expect to perform
...

Having confidence as a personal trainer would give you the courage to be successful
...
Being confident as a personal trainer gives you the strength and
the courage to become successful despite the struggles, however being too confident can
also make you become arrogant and make it difficult to work with your client, which can
affect your role
...
As a personal trainer you can improve your confidence by increasing
your knowledge because knowing what to do about a complex issue or problem can help
you gain confidence
...

Internal psychological factors
Attribution theory is where people have a theory which supposes that people attempt to
understand the behaviour of others by attributing feelings, beliefs, and intentions to them
...
As a personal trainer you would tend to use attribution theory and selfconfidence when judging your clients overall behaviour, in order to give you a greater
understanding on how to deal and work around your clients to achieve the goal you would
have set for your class
...
However, if your self-confidence is too high it can create a misunderstanding, which
can disrupt your relationship with your client
...

Past experiences is ones history of their success which may alter one or contribute to one's
knowledge, opinions, or skills
...
Your past experience will become your tips and guidelines on how to become a
better and a good personal trainer
...
You can use your past experience to
make important decisions
...
Your past experience can also allow you to find the
most effective way to plan your training program to fit with your client or use a similar
training program from the past
...
Although the negative
about it is that can restrict you to do some things, that will make your role easier but you
would not do it because of the possible consequences
...
Our normal behaviour is how our personality is perceived, i
...
whether we are
naturally grumpy, happy, or excitable
...
Because your personality can affect how you would
motivate your client to keep going with the training program
...
The good
thing about having a positive behaviour is that people may find it easier to work with you,
although it can also make some of your clients uncomfortable because they may not
understand if you are truly sincere with your work; making them to be a little more hesitant
to work with you as a personal trainer because you may not be well
...
You can improve your
behaviour as a personal trainer by trying to be positive in what you do and try to express
yourself so that your clients and co-workers can understand you
...

Forms of leadership
Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in
individuals and social systems
...
There are 4
components to transformational leadership and personal trainers tend to be more of
idealised influence – leading by example and as a role model is fundamental to this type of
leadership
...
This sort of leadership
means that you are motivating your client’s through positivity, so that your client can
achieve their original goals
...
It will mean that you as a personal
trainer are carrying out your role in introducing new skills and techniques that your client
can use to achieve their fitness goals
...
The good thing about leading a session transformational is that
they would learn how to stay positive even though the process of achieving a goal is
difficult
...
This person often has unseen duties such as logistical organisation for example
organising travel, organising accommodation and budget control
...
And manages also provide
and guide their clients to the best and affordable facilities that they can use (afford)
...

A manager has numerous responsibilities that revolve around making it easier for their
clients to focus on winning without worrying about the business or organization side of
sports
...
Managers are hired at a variety of venues including
academic institutions, amateur and professional leagues, sporting goods companies, and
even sports marketing firms
...
This is important because it will allow the managers client to trust their managers to
do the things that is most comfortable for them
...
This skill can be
improved by communicating with your client by being on the same level as them; by doing
this, you would have to be more open and listen carefully, as you do that you would pick up
any small traits and analysing them and anticipate methods that would be most suitable for
that particular person for any sort of tasks, in the upcoming situation near the future
...
If a manager has a bad rapport with their athlete(s) then their
athlete(s) won’t be able trust or rely on their manager with private information or even
discuss their concerns, which could affect their performance
...
Having confidence means that you as a manager have the feeling or belief that
one/your client can have faith in you as a manager
...

Being confident will show your client that you know what you are doing and is certain of the
results that you and your client are aiming for
...
Confidence can be improved by gaining more experience and acquiring or
sharpening your other skills
...

Communication is a skill that is broken down into verbal-communication; this is where you
communicate using the spoken word and non-verbal communication; this is where you
communicate through gestures, facial expressions, eye contacts, posture or tone of voice
...
Therefore you as a manager won’t be able to get
the information that you need from your client because your verbal-communication is poor
...

Being organised is also another key skill to make a manager’s job easier
...
Being
organised will allow you to be punctual (for an appointment that is for a promotion for your
client for instance), resourced and would have done background research (which would
show that you are interested in either your client or the contract with a company
...
To improve your organisational skill you can use different types of stationary, i
...

folders, post stick notes, dividers and pins etc
...

Giving feedback is where you as a manager is being attentive to your client
performance/needs by giving the positive and negative part of the evaluation of their
performance or needs
...
This has to use effectively by making sure that you balance
their negatives with positives, so that you keep your clients interests by not depressing them
with too much negative feeds which could drive them to depression
...

Motivator is a skill that is an additional skill, yet skilful skill that can be used to be a
persuasive manager
...
As a good manager, you would have to pick
up on your client’s small traits and understand what make them motivated to improve in
their performance
...
If a manger is not
very motivational then you won’t be able to find a way on how to inspire your clients on
aiming to the top, then you would have to spend money on hiring a phycologist to help
improve their mental state, or even be stuck on the same statues of their sport, then there
will be no profit coming into their performance, which means that you as a manager are not
doing your job as a manager who supports your client
...
Managers also has to be fearless when they are facing a difficult situation that they
that will affect their clients performance
...
For instance, if a company such as Adidas were
wanting to seize their contract with one of your client because they are tired of your client
because they are getting old; you as a manger can bribe them and persuade them that your
client will become popular again and that they will regret seizing your clients contract, and if
they (the Adidas company) have excepted your wish but with limited time
...
If you are not fearless as a manager
then your chances of getting and keeping many contracts with different companies, are less
because you can be engulfed by the fear of doubts and general fear of failure of the state of
the contract that you have put you as a manger and your client in
...
Being able to
engage means that you’re able to occupy or attract someone for their attention
...
Also engaging with your client would mean that your client has some interest
in you as a manager, because you are engaging
...
Being engaging will allow you to communicate with your client, because the verbal –
communication will keep going because it is interesting and engaging
...

The qualities needed to become a good and successful team
manager/manager are:
Knowledge is the key quality and for most important quality as a manager, for that a
manager’s job and responsibility is to make sure that their clients are getting the proper
attention and training to allow them to compete at their highest level and are responsible
for both ambitions and behaviour of their clients
...
A manager has to know the laws of the sport and business laws, otherwise your client is
not playing fair, which can result to disqualification and your client won’t be able to play the
sport
...

An athlete who is good with tactics and strategies will demonstrate them to be a good
leader and understand the needs to be a successful athlete
...
If a manager is not
knowledgeable then their client(s), would not trust you because they would think that you
don’t know what you are doing, but you the manager is wasting your client(s) time
...
Being able to listen to them and empathise with your client, it will allow
your client to express their any concerns or anxieties they may have
...
A manage should
know that sometimes, just having someone to talk to can boost an individual’s morale
...
If a manager is not
empathetic towards your client(s), your client(s) would not express their concerns to you as
a manager, then it can affect their performance, because if your client(s) has some concerns
then they won’t be able to concentrate on their performance, which can eventually result to
an injury
...
When we refer
to mental need we mean; the level of the persons psychological well-being (or an absence of
mental illness)
...
For instance, a person could be a slow
leaner so they need extra support on the thing they need help with
...
If a manager does not understand the metal needs for their
client(s), then you as a manager can end up pressuring your client(s) without noticing the
cause, and end up pressuring them more, and eventually causing damage to your client(s)
health and performance
...

Being positive is where the manager is consistent in or characterized by the presence rather
than the absence of distinguishing features, in other words staying optimistic about things,
rather than being discouraged about the negativity
...
Not only does being positive
shows that you’re optimistic but it is also a sign of strength; that nothing can bring you
down despite any sort of failures
...
If a manager does not stay positive it could influence
your client’s mood to be negative and eventually affect their performance, because they
could be not in the mood on doing their sport because they are not feeling positive
...
Being
goal orientated is where you set an aim to achieve set goal that has to be meet, which is
then broken down into targets; allow you as a manager to be organised and focused on the
set targets that has to be meet in order to achieve the goal
...
In order to do this the manager themselves
have to organise themselves to set targets for their clients to get them to the top of their
sport
...
If both targets are
not meet then you as a manager won’t meet your goal and duty and your client won’t make
it to the top either
...
If a manager is not goal orientated then they won’t stay focused on their
goal on how to improve and provide the best for your client(s), eventually their client(s) will
not improve, because you the manager was not focused on completing the targets that aims
to a specific goal that will benefit your client(s) sport career as well as your reputation as a
manager
...
As a manager you will come across
clients that are disruptive or unmotivated (etc
...
However, as a good manager you need to stay levelheaded because you as a manager are the one who is leading your athlete (client) to the top
of their sport because it is your responsibility as the manager of your client
...
If a leader (you the manager) loses their patients then you can
make your clients worry and stress, which is not what your client need to bring them to the
top of their sport
...

Being approachable is one crucial skill in a leadership role
...
Being approachable will allow your clients to be
open and discuss their problems with you as a manger, because they trust you and see you
as a leader, for that they would see you as their guardian therefore they will discuss their
problems or even things about themselves with you as a manager
...
If you are not approachable as a manager your client(s), won’t
confined in you if they have any problems, concerns or anxieties that you as a manager need
to be aware of; for instance, if your client(s) has motion sickness but they were unable to
approach you because of it and you rented a bus to travel to France for a competition but
you did not know about their sickness and they forgot to take (or even have their tablets),
then they will get sick and you would have to stop every time they throw up (or feel very
nauseous), which can have a negative effect on your client(s) performance
...

Consistent is where the manager is acting or do things in the same way over time, especially
so as to be fair or accurate
...
It is important for a leader not to have favourites or be biased, so that it
would prevent any sort of disagreements within the team and cause their bond within the
team to disrupt
...
If a manager is not consistent, then your client(s) can take you for garneted; for
instance, if you have a client who you like/care about the most and you put them above
everyone else and give that particular client more attention than your other clients; then ,
that client who is your favourite can use you (the manager) to give them all the awards and
chances to become successful within their sport, whilst your other client(s) don’t get
anything valuable (like the smallest of thing for an example a good room to rest with good
showers for everyone instead of one person having the 5 star hotel room and everyone else
in a crap hostel)
...

Managers can present themselves as a role model to their client(s) as it can be a benchmark
for your client(s) to aspire to, which could have been influenced by the manager’s nature of
behaviour and motivation
...
Being a role model to your
client(s) can be a way of motivation
...

Commitment is an essential skill for a manger for that you will literally become a guardian
for your client, for that you would have to be responsible for; both ambitions and behaviour
do the unseen duties such as logistical organisation for example organising travel, organising
accommodation and budget control and then look after your client(s) and ensure that they
know what they are doing and when they are doing it
...
This can be shown though simple acts
like giving out water bottles to the team (your client’s) after their practice, it show to your
client(s) that you respect them and that you as a manager love your job
...

Ethical and having integrity is where you are acting in manners and promote the right from
the wrong
...
Since you are a manager who is someone who takes the business side of your
client’s performance; you would need to have integrity in order to prevent your client from
being banned from their sport, just because the manager takes it upon themselves to use
illegal documents to use for your client’s performance, which can get them banned
...
If you did not know the rules and regulation within the competition or
when being out in public then your client(s) can be banned from the competition and never
be successful within their sport and eventually having to quit their sporting career because
of the negative press
...

In order to get the best of the best and a good quality you need to know how to
communicate and how to negotiate with industries and companies to get the best deal for
the best quality that you can afford
...
Making sure
that you speak clearly, having a good body language, using hand gestures and having good
eye contact when discussing portrays you to be serious when you are discussing
...

Secondly, being goal orientated as a manager I believe is important because it is a way to
provide you with a focus; for that you would set your task into little aims that you as a
manager must complete in order to get the task done, in order to achieve what your
client(s) has been aspiring to
...

Thirdly, I also believe that being engaging is also very important
...
For that, it portrays you to be like a normal person who can relate to
your client(s), but also stay very professional with your job as a manager
...

The Psychological Factors
External physiological factors
Team cohesion is the degree to which individual members want to contribute to the group's
ability to continue as a functioning work unit
...
Team cohesion
can be split into 2 forms and as a manager they need to have a strong social cohesion - is
when a group works together through mutual respect for one another and often very simply
because members enjoy each other’s company
...
As a manager social cohesion within a class means you are able to respect people
despite their age, gender, disability, etc
...
This allows the player(s) to approach their manager, without feeling judged;
making them feel comfortable to approach their manger to confine in
...

However not everyone feels comfortable enough to approach you and tell you about
themselves, because they might not trust you enough
...
Everyone is different and no two personalities are ever the
same, but it is possible to generalise individuals into two categories introverts and
extroverts
...
They are often drawn to individual activity where they can get
training done on one-to-one or in small groups
...
As a
manager you can show different sides to your personality to different clients so that they
may perceive you only in that way and make it easier to build trust in each other
...
Being an
introvert as a manager allows you to be patient with your clients and become a good
listener, however it will make it difficult for you to express your opinion and get your point
across
...
To improve on your
personality as a manager you can be a good conversationalist and become a good listener
...
Once you have much to contribute, learn how
to talk and interact about it with others, your client won’t feel uncomfortable or awkward

with you but rather very relaxed and comfortable
...
If you happen to be shy, when
interacting with your client, you can join a group like Toastmasters that encourages you to
talk about what you know
...
For some people simply
taking part in an activity is reward enough
...
However many activities offer
rewards, these are extrinsic motivation; these rewards may be physical or psychological, for
example: financial compensation for time or success, rewards such as medals and trophies
or perceived admiration from peers and onlookers
...
This means that
your client’s can trust you to carry out your role as their manager
...
You can improve your
motivation by setting yourself small goals that you want to achieve as a manager and push
yourself to become more competitive, in order to carry out your role
...
This could be
any activity from weight lifting, scoring a goal in football or climbing a rock face
...
This is sometimes known as a self-fulfilling prophecy
...
Being
confident as a manager means that your client can trust you as a manager and carry out
your role with effort
...

Although not being confident at all can also make it difficult for you to display your success
...

Confidence grows when you act on what you know
...

And self-confidence is where one has a feeling of trust in their abilities, qualities, and
judgement
...
Having those attribution theory about your client’s, ensures
your client that you understand them, which gives them comfort and reinsurance
...
You can
improve your self-confidence by making sure that your theory of your client’s behaviour is
set on facts rather than predicaments
...
As you grow as a manager you will gain experience from your
failures and successes, on how to improve and develop yourself as a manager
...
Having past experience will help you allot as a manager for that you can use your
past as a reference to help you with your difficulties or even help provide new ideas and
strategies you need to contribute
...
Your past experience can prevent your client’s from getting harmed, because you
may have experience the cause of some risks therefore you would obviously prevent that
from happening
...
The positive thing about using your past experience is
that you can use it as a reference for your current situation in your role
...

The behaviour of an individual can attributed either to their own personality or to external
factors
...
e
...
Your behaviour can play out a factor on how effective
your training program can carry on
...
This is because not everyone can accept your personality, which makes it
harder for you to work with them
...
In an affect it would make them feel guilty if something would to happen to
you, rather than being happy with your result, because your client may be a considerate
person
...
This will prevent any
sort of misunderstanding to occur
...
As a manager you must
have a high self-esteem for that you are the one who is leading your client to their success
...

Having a high self-esteem means that your client’s can trust you because you trust and
know yourself as a manager
...
However when you self-esteem is low it means you cannot be fully

trusted or reliable
...

Forms of leadership
Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in
individuals and social systems
...
There are 4
components to transformational leadership and managers tend to be more of an intellectual
stimulation – this type of leader will encourage creativity and search for opportunities for
innovation and change
...
As a manager this role of leadership is important
to develop relationship with your client’s, it allows your client’s to find opportunities with
their own unique creativity
...
The good thing about leading a class transformational is that they would learn
how to express your creativity and create opportunities with it to inspire to
...
As a manager your form of leadership is
transactional because you are supervising your client’s when they are performing or in front
of the public world, whilst protecting their privacy
...
As a manager you must be a transactional leader because you oversea your client’s
performance as a whole and is responsible for both motivation and discipline, but for you to
do that as a manager you must supervise your client’s
...
The
positive thing about being a transactional leader as a manager is that your role is being
carried out and your client’s are focused and motivated, to achieve their goals and
inspirations through by getting rewards, for that the rewards and punishments are clearly
defined, therefore your client’s will know what they would need to work on and what they
have achieved
...

RISK ASSESSOR/HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER
Risk assessor/health and safety officer is someone who ensues that the sporting
environment is safe for participants and spectators
...
They are responsible
for ensuring that employers and workers comply with safety legislation and that safety
policies and practices are adopted and adhered to
...
To establish, manage and monitor standards,
processes, communications, training and systems to ensure all responsibilities associated
with Health and Safety within Decora are adhered to
...
Having a
good rapport is important because it will make it easier to communicate with one another,
when a matter has to be discussed
...
However if you do not have a good rapport, then it will make it difficult to
communicate with the people you work with
...
Although communication is split
into verbal communication – communication that takes place using spoken words and nonverbal communication – communication that comes through gestures, facial expressions,

eye contact, posture or tone of voice
...
A health and safety officer would need verbal
communication in order to advise different types of people at a work place
...
A health and safety officer would also need
to be good with non-verbal communication because it will help get the message across as it
express the level of risks, so the people you are advising will take that safety into
consideration
...

Being organised means that you are being punctual, resourced and has done a background
research
...
These are different scenarios where different safety hazards are being applied to
different sporting environment
...
If you are not organised
it will make it difficult for you to get the health and safety hazards across without confusion
of the reason why these hazards are set
...
When you are
able to negotiate it means that you are able to promote health and safety through
discussion
...
If your negotiation skills are poor then implementing
safety standards may become difficult
...
In order for a health and safety officer to promote health and
safety you need to have the knowledge and understanding of the knowledge to achieve the
set goal of promotion
...
If you don’t do this it will
make it harder to implement the health and safety rules for tat it will become two separate
rules that the people within that workplace would have to follow; making it difficult for
them to remember the rules, because it is not related to the general rules
...
If they are people who do not prefer to read a long list of rules, but rather prefer to to
listen, then advising the workers through a video or an act to get the message across is
essential
...

Understanding the physical needs is something critical that is needed to make a decent
living, for instance this could be a child/teenager that needs to have some health and safety
regulations adapted for them specifically or someone with a disability
...
e
...
, because they are the most vulnerable group, who
would need support and/or guidance
...

Being positive is where you are being optimistic
...
However, if you are not positive as a health and safety
officer then it will make it difficult for you to enforce the health and safety regulations
...
Being goal orientated as a health and safety official is important for that it
provides a focus for the health and safety officer
...
In the case of a health and safety officer the
main aim is to promote health and safety, but in order to do this, the officers has to
understand the kind of environment it is, what sort of people work in that environment,
how would it be most effective to deliver and promote health and safety etc
...

Being patient is where you are able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering
without becoming annoyed or anxious
...
However, if you are
not patient then it will become more difficult to establish the health and safety regulations
...
It is necessary for a health and safety officer to stay consistent when
designing the health and safety regulations to keep it fair and equal to all the working
people within the sporting environment
...
For
instance if there was a health and safety rule that says that all the athletes leave the
building first if there were a fire and then all the cleaners, administrators and cooks last
then those who leave last could end up stuck in the fire because it was in an order of group
of people rather than an assembling with people guiding each other out of the building
...

Committed is where you are bound to a certain course or policy; dedicated
...
Being committed as a health and
safety officer is necessary for that you must demonstrate that you are a hundred percent
committed to support the aim of prompting health and safety with the other team members
within your group of people who are also promoting health and safety; by being committed
to the job it will allow to carry out the necessary risk assessment properly
...

The important skills needed to be a good risk assessor/health and safety
officer:
The three most important skills that I believe a health and safety officer must enquire is
having good communication, good negotiation skills and organisational skills
...

Secondly, I believe that a good health and safety officer must have good negotiation skills to
convince managers of the need to implement and maintain safety standards that may
compromise speed or efficiency in the sporting environment
...

The Psychological Factors
External physiological factors
Team cohesion is the degree to which individual members want to contribute to the group's
ability to continue as a functioning work unit
...
Team cohesion
can be split into 2 forms and as a risk assessor they need to have a strong task cohesion - is
the degree to which a group works together to reach a common goal, which is to ensure
that the sporting environment is safe for participant
...
This means that the health and safety officer has to stay focused, and make
sure that all the necessary risks are being assessed and prevented
...
Although task cohesion can be difficult at times for that you can lose the
focus, when working on a task, then you can miss out some risks that has to be assessed,
which then a harm can become exposed to the participants, making the environment
unsafe
...
For some people simply
taking part in an activity is reward enough
...
However many activities offer
rewards, these are extrinsic motivation; these rewards may be physical or psychological, for
example: financial compensation for time or success, rewards such as medals and trophies
or perceived admiration from peers and onlookers
...
As a risk
assessors being motivated means that the participants are ensured that they are safe under
your safe assessment
...
Although it can blind you to and lose focus on the other small important needs
...

Arousal is a physiological state that is alert and ready for action and anxiety is a feeling of
worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome
...
This means that
when carrying out our role when planning health and safety points it would be precise and
accurate
...
However, being to over aroused or
anxious will have a negative effect, reducing both focus and control, meaning your planning
may not be fully right
...
Because of something known as cognitive dissonance,
the mind can actually adapt to the way you act
...

Confidence is the belief that you can be successful at performing an activity
...
A lack of
confidence will affect motivation, increase anxiety and reduce the level at which an
individual can expect to perform
...

Having confidence as a health and safety officer would give you the courage to be
successful
...
Being confident as a risk assessor gives you the
strength and the courage to become successful despite the struggles, however being too
confident can also make you overlook the important risks
...
As a health and safety officer
you can improve your confidence by increasing your knowledge because knowing what to
do about a complex issue or problem can help you gain confidence
...

Internal psychological factors
Past experiences is ones history of their success which may alter one or contribute to one's
knowledge, opinions, or skills
...
Your
past experience will become your tips and guidelines on how to become a better as a good
health and safety officer
...
You can
use your past experience to make important decisions
...
The positive thing about
using your past experience is that you can use it as a reference for your current situation in
your role
...

The behaviour of an individual can attributed either to their own personality or to external
factors
...
e
...
Your behaviour can play out a factor on how effective
your training program can carry on
...
This is because you may be the type of person who is very
cautious about everything, therefore your plan/work may have every point that has is taken
into consideration and very detailed, and if it is not you behaviour can become very
impatient and fidgeting
...
The good thing about having a positive behaviour is that
people may find it easier to work with you, although it can also make some of your coworkers uncomfortable because they may not understand if you are truly sincere with your
work; making them to be a little more hesitant to work with you as a health and safety
officer because you may not be well
...
This will prevent any sort of misunderstanding to occur
...
As a risk assessor you must
have a high self-esteem for that you are the one who is guiding the participants in a safe
path
...
Having a high self-esteem means that the
participants can trust you and your role as a health and safety officer because you believe
that you are as important as everyone else, therefore everyone must be treated the same
when it comes to a person’s health and safety
...
However when you self-esteem is low it means you
cannot be fully trusted or reliable
...

Forms of leadership

Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in
individuals and social systems
...
There are 4
components to transformational leadership and health and safety officer tend to be more of
an inspirational motivation – these leaders have a clear vision and are able to project this to
their team
...
As a health and
safety officer this role of leadership is important to develop your career as an health and
safety officer, for that your job can be quite boring and consecutive so that you need to
inspiration to motivate you to keep going
...
The good thing about leading in your team
transformational is that they would learn how to express your creativity and create
opportunities with it to inspire to
...

Sports coaches help people participating in sports to work towards achieving their full
potential
...
Coaches are need in the sport industry in order to improve performance
the performance of professional athletes
...
Whatever the context, coaching involves developing the
participants' physical and psychological fitness and providing the best possible practical
conditions in order to maximize their performance by providing feedback on performance
and fitness, discussing tactics, giving guidance on nutrition and injury prevention, keeping
up to date with good practice, helping players keep a positive mental attitude and selfdiscipline
...
This is important as for a coach because it will allow you in order for
you to develop your athlete’s skill (which normally already exists) to improve their
performance you need to build your trust with your athlete, so they are able to confined in
you about any of their concerns that can affect their training
...
As well as being honest with your
athlete, gives your athlete the understanding that you consider them and wish then the
best
...
If you as a coach do not have a good rapport with your athlete it will make it
difficult for you to communicate
...
Although communication is split
into verbal communication – communication that takes place using spoken words and nonverbal communication – communication that comes through gestures, facial expressions,
eye contact, posture or tone of voice
...
So that they can understand what the teacher is teaching by, breaking the
information down so that they can understand it in their own way
...
Although this skill quality can vary within
different people for that some teachers would speak loud and clear, but quickly but others
can speak slow and clear but quietly
...
In physical education non – verbal communication is key when teaching a
new skill
...
When teachers teach physical education they tend to use this skill more
often when they are demonstrations of the skill that is needed within the sport
...

Being organised is where a person is able to make preparation for any sort of event
...
If you as a coach is not organised it will make it difficult for you to get things
prepared for your athlete to train with, eventually slowing down the process on improving
your athlete skill that is required to improve your athletes performance, for an competition
etc
...
This is used as a basis for improvement, for a performance, in order to win
and achieve something within your athlete’s sport
...
It will allow your athlete to know how to improve their skills
...

The qualities needed to become a good and successful coach are:
Knowledge is the key quality and for most important quality as a coach, for that a coach job
and responsibility is to improve your athlete’s skills
...
However knowledge is broken down to having the
knowledge of the rules and laws – which important for a coach for that there are laws that
must be kept otherwise your athlete can become banned from their sport, for an example, if
you force your athlete to do doping which is illegal, and the authorities find out then your
athlete will become banned and it will become your responsibility for that you forced your
athlete to do doping and you will lose your job
...
A coach also must have
knowledge of techniques, strategies and tactics – which will help your athlete’s skills to
improve and their overall performance, which is basically your job
...
A coach also must have knowledge about their athlete(s) – which would help
you find ways to motivate and encourage your athlete(s), it also gives you an understanding
of their habits that could affect their performance
...

If a coach wants to understand and know the concerns their athlete(s) concerns that has
been bothering them and affecting their performance then the coach needs to know how to
be empathetic and listen to their concerns carefully
...
By being empathetic towards your athlete(s), it will remind your
athlete(s) that you as a coach is there for them to support them and to focus on their goal
on being the top and nothing else
...

Understanding the mental needs of your athlete(s) is very important
...
As a coach you
should be able to detect any form of stress, which can be become a risk to your athlete(s)
health and performance, because stress can lead to hypertension and other health risks,
which would affect your athlete(s) performance
...
Understanding your athlete(s) mental needs, will allow you to prevent any sort of
health risks and keep them on track of their health and improve their health to the best, in
order to achieve their best
...

As a coach staying positive will help a coach to stay calm and level headed
...
However if you as a coach is not positive it can affect your athlete(s)
and discourage them
